An NPR interview with a John's Hopkins researcher that says there may be a link between a parasite found in cat litter, and mental illness.

What microorganism can make mice attracted to cats or make humans more likely to have car accidents or even develop a mental illness like schizophrenia? Host Guy Raz talks with infectious disease researcher Robert Yolken about Toxoplasma gondii and how it might affect human behavior.

That explains a lot!

I am pretty sure that is you cook the cat to an internal temperature of 160 degrees it is safe to eat.

I saw it on the Food Network I think,......Good Eats maybe?

Doesn't surprise me in the least.

I have always found cat owners to be more than a little "off." They are vile creatures....(cat's and their owners)

Yolken is too late. Our victory is now assured. Let him waste his words in a pathetic warning to mankind, soon you shall all be infected to do our will and be assimilated to the ranks of our servants, or die.

This is about PA's  cat problem, isn't it?

pahunkboy -> RE: Research Links Parasite In Cats To Mental Illnesses (6/27/2010 5:42:02 PM)

i have only had this cat for 14 months.

So we wont blame the cat for me being crazy.

O_O;

So you mean sleeping in a room with CAT SCAT can lead or contribute to mental illness? The only pet I am going to get are a bonsai tree and a rock.

My frog counts as a pet. So make that THREE PETS NONE LIVING. That frog was the only damn anchor I had in a sea of storms, so to speak. Some get living organisms that trick people. With cuteness. Psychological Warfare at its best.

The kitty invasion is neigh. Hide your catnip and follow the pussy.

I've had toxoplasmosis. It's a bitch of a disease. No treatment unless you're pregnant and it lasts a good six months. And I'm still pissed that my brother flatly refused to get his cat tested for it.

I didn't get pregnant for about ten years later and my oldest is the bipolar. Makes me wonder if there's a relationship since I wasn't actively infected at the time.

Are you sure it wasn't Andrew Zimmern? It's not the parasite, even though toxoplasmosis is a nasty thing especially for pregnant women. What makes us cat lovers crazy is the fact that we care and feed the most arrogant, self entiled varmits on the planet. Cuz theys bes so cute and theys has cheezburgers! (If you're not a cute cat pic fan, this just sounded totally insane. Told you!)

DomKen -> RE: Research Links Parasite In Cats To Mental Illnesses (6/28/2010 12:23:08 AM)

did somebody say cheezeburger?

* sigh *

Having been raised by wild house cats, i guess i never had a chance...

SirPumpy -> RE: Research Links Parasite In Cats To Mental Illnesses (7/4/2010 4:45:46 AM)

There is all sorts of anecdotal evidence against having cats inside a house and yet we still keep the rotten little bastards in close proximity to us and worse to our children.

Toxoplasmosis, Ring worm, Cat flu cross overs not to mention stuff long dead they proudly drag home and INTO the house.

Add to that their disposition which aint too sunny and the fact that cat scratches and bites ALWAYS fester I think theres a message there somewhere about cats cohabitating with humans especially when WE have to clean up after them.

I dont like cats as a species but I have 2 farm cats I look after but the boundaries are clear, I will vet you and care for you on the proviso that you catch and kill all rodents, that you leave the Kookaburras, Cockys and Galah's alone because I wont vet your dumb arse if you take on a carnivorous bird of prey or attempt to screw a wombat no matter how much it looks like that fat chick from the farm across the highway.

Feel free to kill possums (If you dare), Rabbits, Hares and snakes, mooch for scraps and sun yourself in full view of the working dogs (Border collies and a Big Old Boxer bitch) but if you come into the house yard or the house you WILL BE EATEN with extreme prejudice and whatever condiments the Dogs have at hand!

Dont get me wrong here, I like cats.

I just couldn't eat a whole one............

LaserKitty -> RE: Research Links Parasite In Cats To Mental Illnesses (7/4/2010 4:50:53 AM)

I've never had a cat scratch fester, and I have been around cats all my life.  INDOOR cats, which require litter box cleaning.  Basic first aid for any cut/wound applies.
