The Il Vinaio restaurant near Phoenix, Arizona, is offering a "lion burger" for $21 (£14), served with spicy homemade crisps and roast corn on the cob.

The restaurant has already received a bomb threat and hundreds of angry emails from animal rights activists.

Owner Cameron Selogie said the decision to serve the lion burgers was a tribute to South Africa, host nation of the World Cup

so...tastes like chicken?

BentUnit -> RE: Lion burgers (6/23/2010 4:00:33 AM)

Part of me believes this is a gimmick.

If this is a "Lion Burger" I put to you with the cost of permits and upkeep of  Lions I would say that the portion of Lion flesh to Beef or Venison would be miniscule.
There would be no way this would be pure Lion meat.

I have no issue with eating Lion.
With the caveat that the animal is dispatched humanely.
The carcass is procured legitimately.
That what is severed to diners is as described on the menu e.g actually the protein being Lion without dilution.

Bent, they raise the lions in Illinois, and mix it with ground beef [:)]

DarlingSavage -> RE: Lion burgers (6/23/2010 4:12:26 AM)

Oh no!  Now we're going to have lion CAFOs?   This is just awful!  We do NOT need to eat lions!  I don't think people should be eating lions, either.

Tell me...are there abattoirs in Illinois accredited in the killing and butchering of Lions that adhere to food safety and handing guidelines?

If it is not pure Lion, but Beef mixed with Lion then it false advertising and a blatant attempt to mislead the consumer.

Fuckin' Arizona. The lions must've been "illegal" immigrants[8|]

Fast Reply

From what I understood of the article this was going to be a one-time purchase of 10 pounds of lion meat that would be divided up into approximately 30 burgers. At that rate each burger would be made up of about 1/3 pound of lion meat. I'm guessing that lion meat would be VERY lean and probably needs a small amount of beef with a high fat content to make the burgers stick together.

So I don't get the idea that this would be an ongoing menu item or that lion after lion was going to be killed. If this one business was only going to be using 10 pounds of meat, total, and assuming it was just one adult lion that was being killed, then I would be curious to know where the rest of lion meat went and why the lion was being destroyed to begin with.

BentUnit -> RE: Lion burgers (6/23/2010 6:04:12 AM)

The fat that binds a lot of meat patties comes from either pork or beef fat that comes from around the heart or kidneys as well as eggs.

You are right even allowing ridiculous dressing out percentages a Lion carcass will yield more than 10 pounds of meat.
Another reason why this whole gimmick is nothing but and you are not eating Lion flesh at all.

This was written in 2003, seems serving "alternative" meat has been a trend for some time.  Besides their value as a dinner item, some are being raised for medical research.

If there 's a buck to be made, it appears someone will figure out how.   It seems wrong to me, unatural, to eat carnivores.

Well don't eat eggs, chicken, beef or pork products or dairy products because meat meal, in a lot of countries makes up a large portion of processed feeds given to domestic farm animals.

These animals are fed ground up animal protein (meat meal ) mixed with steamed flaked grain and tallow in pellet form.

Nasty, but true.

heartcream -> RE: Lion burgers (6/23/2010 7:34:44 AM)

We ned to stop poisoning our food and our animals and being altogether weird with all of it.

I am not sure what the solution is but lets stop feeding ourselves and our animals and plants for that matter, inedible creepy shit.

If the lions were being hunted by individuals, I wouldn't have a problem with it.  But packing them up in CAFOS, which is just as wrong for cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens, I have a serious problem with.

Arpig -> RE: Lion burgers (6/23/2010 8:58:52 PM)

So I take it you are a strict vegan who only eats organic produce?

DarlingSavage -> RE: Lion burgers (6/23/2010 9:27:07 PM)

I have been but I'm not presently.  I was for years, though.  I should go back but it's really not that easy to follow.  I don't eat meat every day, though.  I don't think that eating meat is wrong, I do think that the animal food industry needs to make serious changes.  It's inhumane treatment of animals and it's harmful to the environment.  Even more so, this is what is causing antibiotic resistant disease and making antibiotics that are important to humans become ineffective.
