I have an older Sanyo television in my front room. Earlier this week something strange happened and I dont know what or how. Suddenly the volume only works when we play a dvd or vhs movie but there is absolutely no volume if we try and watch regular tevevision. I have tried to look at the settings but honestly have no idea what I am looking at or for. I am in all honesty making things worse by messing with stuff.

I called comcast (my cable provider) and they said it sounds like an issue with the television not their service so they can't help me. Lol

However, I am stumped. Any ideas or suggestions?

I don't know if this will help, but if you have Comcast cable, you probably use their big remote.  One of the buttons should say "Mute".  Try clicking on it when it's in TV or Cable mode.  You (or a kid or a pet) might have accidently hit the Mute button while it was in TV or Cable mode, which muted it, but then you might have switched to DVD or VHS mode and Mute might not be "in effect" or whatever in that mode, if that makes sense, so you have sound there, but are still Muted in Cable TV mode.  ???

The other thing you could try is unhooking all the cables and connections and just play the tv on its own, see if it works that way.  If it does, but not when stuff is plugged in, I don't know how the hell to fix that, lol.  That might be an internal electronical problem, or something equally mysterious. :)

Check the cables physically, if it's working with DVD etc then the tv is probably fine, just not getting the audio through from the antenna/cable/whatever. Other than that, no idea.

It's not muted that is what their dad told me to check. Lol Then he told me to check settings but um like I said I have no idea what I am checking for. I will check the audio cables thanks!

Ok I unplugged the cable cord and the volume got louder on the tv but then nothing came in obviously. I am so stumped. Lol I can't even figure out how to make the text come on the bottom so we could at least read the dialog. Lol

So what you're saying is you got no sound on broadcast TV correct ? But you have sound from other sources correct ?

If that is the case the fault might be in the IF strip of the TV iteself. If so I would consider not spending the money to fix it becaue usually a cable or digital box has a composite video output. Only marginally better than channel 4 or whatever, but better.

There is so much information I would need, it's not funny. What type of cable, box or no box ? The DVD, does it use the five wire HD set, or HDMI or what ? Or are you running it on comopsite (yellow, white and red) ?

I have so little in the way of specifics right now is all I can say is if it is a JVC, DO NOT plug it in with the back off.

Give me specifics and I'll give you specifics. Right now there are too many questions for valid answers.

I am an expert in the field, except for a few things. Been at it over 30 years. In short, my questions boil down to : what are you running ?

T,

My son fixed it by reseting the comcast cable box. They were the 1st ones I called when it happened they said it was an issue with the tv not their equipement. Which was obviously incorrect.

I hope you call Comcast, tell them, and give them a good "in your face!"

I hates Comcast.  I truly do.

time to buy new television

Why is that since it worked after the comcast box was reset?
