I am a group owner on another site dedicated to the topic of sexual, sensual torture. So far I have over 300 members but looking over the topics posted, it looks like most of them come from me. Dang it is hard to get people sharing ideas about what they do or what they like to have done! I get that people might be embarrassed to share, but if anyone knows of a way to spark the desire to post please pass on suggestions.

I am starting to feel like a pervert being the one who mostly posts ideas to try.

And if you have any ideas please pass them along. I can always post them (feeling more perverted) and perhaps others there might find some comment to share.

Very little I would offer would be outside the Public eye. Embarassment is an effecive form of torture but many people seem to disagree with the practice.

For me, it is sensation play using contrasts like hot,cold, rough, smooth, gentle, hard, pain, pleasure, sharp dull, tasteless, tasteful and the knowledge that you don't know what is coming next, so the anticipation, blind folds help in this. To me, it is mind games, mind games that I like and I like the coloured explosions of light in my mind. The thing is what comes of it, is a deep sort of meditation where I can think clearly and creatively and this I welcome.

Your group has 300 participants but first, you must realize that there are different levels of participation. In any online community, you have to figure out that only about 5%-10% are the regular participants, about another 15%-20% will read regularly and participate occasionally and the rest are really on the peripheral.

So based on those numbers (which actually come from a study I'd prefer not to post on this message board but can PM you if you like), you are looking at about a potential 15-30 regular active participants.

Now add to that the taboo factor. I'm assuming that your group is on a kink based forum and it might already attract open minded people, but even within kink, there are levels of intensity. Sadism and masochism labelled as sexual torture can be harsh for some. You might have a larger peripheral group than the norm. You might be somewhat of a teacher for these people. There are a many possibilities.

If you are looking for ways of increasing participation, maybe in your group description, you can give an example of the types of questions you are looking for. That might prompt certain people. If you know people within the group, perhaps ask them if they might post a question and help you boost the dynamism of the group.

Remember though, that all online communities, big or small, only survive if they serve a purpose and fulfil a need. You can steer the group, but it is the members who drive it.

:) thank you those are all good suggestions. And your estimates are roughly correct. I do get people posting comments to various topics I have put forth. And the amount of private mail regarding those topics is about a third higher. Based on that I imagine I am seen as a teacher of sorts, as is one of my other regular members (who is very creative!). I have gotten one of my munch group members to post something on a breast press as a favor to me. He joined because he noticed the group recently. Within my own personal group of munch people, real life buddies, ect, I have not told them about my fet group, probably because I don't like to think of myself as a pervert. And this group does point those arrows in my direction (lol kiwi).
I guess I will change up the page a bit and continue on my search for ideas to post.

I find more people respond than post new threads. This holds true on cooking groups as well.

It's really hard to keep a forum-type community active, actually. Based on my own experience, this one here at CM is really unique. Des is right, most people like to read what someone else posted, rather than think up new threads of their own, once the few issues or questions they might have had have been answered. New forums (fora, whatever) seem to have their heyday early on, then people get bored and move on. There is usually only a small core of "regulars" that stay on...until they lose interest, too. Then you get all the complaints that there are no interesting topics for them to post on, in spite of your pleas to please post some,lol.

You might try a contest of some kind.....wish I had some better suggestions for you :(

I guess it is true anywhere... lookie-loos are the main population. I am used to posting and reading so creating a group was easy enough. But to keep it going I think I am going to have to do a lot more research OR, get more serious about perversions. Hmmm

Greetings Missokyst....

You do have another solution to your problem. Require that to stay on the board everyone has to post at least once in some period of time. That could be as much as six months or as little as one month. You will lose at least half of your membership at the end of the first period whatever it is. Probably half again at the end of the second. Also require that new people post within a short time or they get booted. Maybe allow people on longer without posting if they post a topic rather than just reply to one.

I would encourage participation, instead of penalizing lurkers who are maybe too shy of getting criticism to post. It's not easy sticking one's neck out and...waiting to be mocked or have your work picked apart or called boring. <grins>

I was at a site I loved dearly, but it was on EZ Board and was hacked and almost everything disappeared. Including the years that I was there. Story writing was encouraged in one area of our message board. It would be a story challenge, each person writing a paragraph or two or more. It helped to get the ball rolling, and we were kind to each other about it.

At this site we get ice cream cones and paddles and handcuffs next to our names depending on the amount of posts...what if at yours these were different, and earned by writing stories? If a certain amount of people read the story, then another award symbol added. I bet others would want to read what many others have gone to...

See where I'm going here? Basically hold a wet tee shirt contest, challenge others to expose themselves and cheer them on.

Maybe have a challenge wand to pass along, to write one of a dozen types of scenarios. Maybe a numbered system for feedback, so nobody could bomb another...one button for originality in some aspect, two for causing others to race out and try something, 3...whatever. There is usually something positive that can be said unless the other person really gave very little effort.

Something will have to pull in ego though, some reward given. With others, a challenge to their creativity...one person writing someone into a very tricky situation and handing over the torch for the other person to get them out of it.
