I agree with your sentiment, but in the case of television, there is another element... ratings. Advertisers use the ratings to select which programs to air their commercials. While I understand that Neilson attempts to have a broad range of people who rate programs, I suspect that the "average" person just doesn't have the time or energy to participate, or has never been asked. So, it's the "non-average" people out there who are affecting what is being shown. You have the right idea, though... the advertisers are who support the programming. If enough people contacted the advertisers to complain, and the advertisers pulled out from the programming, things would change.

The same thing can be said about Gossip mags and such. If people don't buy them they don't make money, which is after all why they exist. Sadly there will probably always be people who just can't do without their fix of celebrity gossip.

Yeah, if "you" feel this way about it, imagine what the celebrities feel who have to deal with the crap and constantly having their lives fed to anyone who feels they have a right to know. The reason the media does this is because its sells whatever it is they are trying to sell. angel

Celebs help drive it and need the media to drive their own careers. I don't know who is the host and who are the parasites but it is a pretty parasitic symbiotic relationship that each party needs to survive.

Chuckles, actually personal stuff or playing off on personal stuff going on in their lives, no they don't. At least not the ones i know personally. They value their privacy and like to have controlled media releases not gossip or games that involve speculation about their lives.

The reason the media does this is because its sells whatever it is they are trying to sell. angel i have real sympathy for those guys, people with a talent that is, who are actually in the performing arts because they have a talent and a passion for it. and that was how it was a while back - we felt sorry for those guys - but now its changed. now we have this reality tv spewing out 'stars' who have no talent and are in the industry BECAUSE they want the attention, and will do anything to get the attention even. big brother for instance - oh fucking christ how i hate that programme, it spews out nobodies and makes them 'stars' for what???? - acting like arseholes in a totally false situation. i avoid all of that crap - celebrity this, celebrity that - its all nobodies and has beens who have dropped off the map or want to get on the map because theyre lives are meaningless if theyre face isnt in a magazine at least once a week. ........ and we're told we want this and we want to watch this - i dont and i vote my opinion by not watching and not reading, but clearly plenty of people do or it wouldnt be so big now, so as much as i dont want to be i continue to be barraged by this total rubbish, radio, tv, mags, internet - its everywhere and i cant avoid it, in one format or another im made to be a consumer - [sm=gaah.gif]
