i get aggravated by the full scale crappolla we constantly get bombarded with.  right now on msn we're being asked who cheryl crow should go out with now that she's soon to be divorced.

really, honestly, do people actually give that much of a shit - or am i just a miserable meanie not entering into the spirit of this drivel -

its a meaningless moan, but i just needed to vent and i wondered if there were any other bloody stupid phucking questions going on out there that get on peoples nerves.

last christmas, after a year of financial ruin for many people, families who'd lost people in afghanistan,  we were invited to feel sorry for Mrs Beckham and the pressure she would be under keeping up with all her stupid friends and their christmas festivities.  i in fact wrote to msn and told them they were a load of vapid morons - interestingly enough they did pull that particularly insensitive shit.

maybe im just not getting the point, but frankly i dont want to - i just want them to stop ramming this BOLLOX down my throat!!

I have said this for years. The media is celebrity driven. Ok, the planet is being screwed over by corporate fat cats, but it only becomes interesting if some star calls attention to it. I am not saying it is the fault of media, but they are the route to our mental decline.
WE are responsible for buying into that crap. From caring why Paris Hilton shows her crotch, to being amused when that red haired girly gets arrested, to believing that a size 0 is normal, and a size 10 is plus sized. WE accept it as normal. WE allow them dictate what we believe because no one has the guts to stand up in mass and say "I am sick of the BS and I will not buy it anymore." Literally and figuratively.

FR:

I have always wondered if part of what drives the interest in the lives of the celebrities is that some people like the validation that comes from seeing the beautiful and famous screw up.

If someone who seems to have all the things that most people have dreamed about can't keep it together with all the money and resources available to them, then perhaps it makes people who perceive themselves as less fortunate as either not being so badly off or even a bit superior to those who have fallen. After all the gossip headlines are much more focused on the bad stuff than the good.

i agree - what i cant figure out is why, when you ask this sort of question the majority of individuals will say what we're saying - which would suggest that we are sick and tired of the media dictating this crap - and yet it still keeps going on and bloody on -

the whole 'celebrity' thing is nuts.

i personally couldnt care a damn what paris does, how did she ever become famous in the first place anyway -

you know what though.  i seriously doubt that if we (the world) got the majority to sign a petition to do away with this banal crap the media would still feed it to us.  its insidious, iniidious, snuk into magazines and the tv and we are forced to buy into it.

jordan apparently went into a decline after moving to the states where few people took any notice of her.  these people create news simply to have notice taken of them - theyre creepy attention seekers - rant rant

Bollox - meant in the sweetest way possible of course. Noone is being forced to buy into it, don't read it, it's not a problem. The fact is that if there weren't a demand for the titilating stuff, it wouldn't be printed. Publishers and owners are in the business of selling papers and magasine. If people stopped buying them they would stop printing those stories.

zeph, i dont buy the mags - i do watch tv and have snippets of 'reality tv' or some saddo 'celebrity' appear the adds.  i might buy a mag thats got some article im interested in and by dint of that im 'buying into' the dross that fills the other pages.

i think its true that maybe we do enjoy hearing them fall flat on their face - but a year or so ago that was done, literally to death with a woman called jade who basically had her fight with cancer televised pretty much to the end.

we're letting these saddos into our life, but the trouble is, we're not really being given the option.

As far as i can tell the celebrity celebration/castration really started going to town when 24 hour "news" programing started. It was as if if there was a dreath of news, the producers knew they could make up some titilating something and go on about it for hours.  Sort of like how they will telecast car chases for hours. Thats not news, thats just filler............

Of course, when i was a sweet young thing growing up in New Zealand we got the local weekly magazine that always had something in it about the British royals. Nothing derogatory mind you, but there would be something about what they were doing.

Celebrity watching and reporting isn't new - but the extent and nastiness of it is.

Sorry lally didn't mean to imply you were buying the mags, I meant you in a general sense. Of course we're given the option, don't look at the mags, don't watch the gossip shows, it's really that simple. I haven't a clue what the latest goss is, I pay no attention to it at all apart from stumbling into a thread about it by mistake.

it used to be that all this gossip wasnt wanted by the people in the limelight, serious actors and the like - they used to get pissed off with the infringement on their privacy - this 'celeb' stuff is relatively new, talentless people scrounging for attention.

im not bitter - i just get annoyed with it - i shouldnt, and ill try not to be from now on - i suppose its just the assumption that we're all fascinated by them - and i just find that crass and annoying.  but ill take a deep breath and go back to ignoring it again - rant over. x

No one with a mac would ever say these sorts of things.

Sheryl Crow was married? Who cares and who cares?

See that's the thing. They do it because we buy it. If people stopped buying enquirer or the news, turned Off the channel when the celebrity bits were on television instead of watching, enrapt by the peacocks on display, then advertising dollars would dwindle. The only way to change is to change us.
I used to buy magazine subscriptions until I happened to be researching something and discovered the beautiful model with flawless skin and a perfect body and long beautiful lashes was a 14 yr.
Further studies showed me that Paris.. is a size 0. And during that time her buddy was a *horror* size 2. They were pointing out her flaws.
We buy it. We support it. Until we say STOP, and mean it by not putting our time (which advertisers hate!) into viewing, it will continue.
In this case the lowest common denominator wins. And that is the my life sucks, but look at all those beautiful stars who have everything.

The only way to create change is to hit them where it hurts, in the revenue. Sadly, that will never happen because people now view this as normal.

And this brings me to what really pisses me off. It is now custom for reality shows to make stars of people that never even acted. And did you know that E entertainment does a show called WILD GIRLS, that is making stars of people who robbed other celebrities? They have taken criminals... THIEVES... and given them a show about what they do every day, and how difficult it is on them and their parents to await trial.

It makes me sick. I took E Entertainment off my channel listings.

I agree with zeph on this. The overwhelming majority of the stuff is avoidable.

Having said that, I sometimes like a bit of gossip.

I avoid watching those types of programs in general, much too negative and superficial. It is especially annoying to have to hear about the latest celebrity marriage, divorce, custody, arrest, rehab, court appearance, etc on the evening news when someone is busted for drugs, alcohol, sexcapades, etc.
