Status: offline 		So my landlord (claims) she sold the house I live in. I say "claims" because I found out that she really hasn't. Anyway, with my various physical issues, getting out of this house isn't a bad thing. I found a GREAT new place that has everything I could ask for, including a dishwasher, washer/dryer and SIX huge closets!

Like everyone else, the only reason I didn't do this sooner is because the idea of packing (again) makes my head hurt.

So I welcome any suggestions on how I might make this process easier.

Status: offline 		Start packing as early as possible, because it always takes longer than you think, and pack by room. Mark each box with the room it came from, and preferably with what exactly is in it. And it's best to mark it on at least 2 sides as well as the top, so you can read them when they are stacked. Get more boxes than you think you'll need; most places will take unused boxes back for a refund if you save the receipt. Try to use uniform-sized boxes as much as possible, and thoroughly tape the bottoms and the tops of the boxes. That'll help stack them much more stably. Start saving all of your old newspapers immediately; they're great for packing most things. More later if I think of anything.

Less to pack, less to move.

Last time it went like this for my Ma. I kinda ran the job and hired the muscle.

First of all if it's a house, you need one person who can drive. We got the ramp from the Uhaul to go right on the porch.

Pack ALL the small stuff first, well in advance. Just leave yourself enough dishes, clothes or whatever to get by. Get those boxes into the corners. When the muscle comes, load all the big stuff first. Then you have like a chain gang to the truck with all the small stuff. Women, kids, all can help at that point. One guy in the truck who knows how to load a truck. Matresses between mirrors, keep it tight to minimize movement. Use extra blankets and such to keep from scratching things up.

All the small stuff comes out first. The muscle brings it in. Ma, get over here, she stands at the door looking at what boxes and beds are carried in and just says "Back bedroom, front bedroom, kitchen, upstairs, basement", etc. Anythime there is no answer the stuff goes on the porch, and whatever goes in goes in the closets first and then the corners, out of the way of the furniture. Once everything is in, you put one guy in hooking up the stove, fridge, washer and dryer. Another assembles the beds, places them and the dressers properly in the rooms. The livingromm and all that comes later.

Then you give the guys some partying money and they can go. The rest is up to you. The couchj should be pretty near where you want it, like most other things.

Now if you are moving into an apartment with an elevator things are different. Depending on a few circumstances you might want to move all the big stuff first. It depends. And with most apartments you are not dealing with appliances. It makes a difference.

I know this because my sinister and I were terrible and we got thrown out of more places than I could list. The rent was there, they just didn't want it. Now we have to buy houses. But that's not so bad and we don't have to move as often.

So that was one attempt at useful flippancy for the day, glad to have it out of the way. It's only about 9:30 AM here. I am so ahead of schedule !

But I do know an ill planned move can be a nightmare. A Woman wanted out RIGHT NOW, before her ex got out of jail. We had to work fast. Well she put her box of Kotex right in the doorway to "make sure it got there" and when we came rolling along with the refrigerator it damn near killed us. Don't do that. While packing think of paths in and out. Keep them clear. So many people don't do this it is not funny.

Status: offline 		If my math is correct I have moved 19 times in 30 years. Yikes. Panda's packing tips are excellent as is Aileen's suggestion to jettison that which you don't need and don't use. Moving everything in one truck has seemed to be better than multiple small loads.

A buddy once said- I would do anything to not have to move.

While I agree that is normally the best thing to do, the town I live in charges to pick up bulk items, cost of 10 bucks per item (which is ridiculous). I have quite a few of those items that won't be coming with me. At the new place, once a week they have bulk pick up (free of charge) so I get to take the stuff I want to get rid of with me to throw out at the new place. Neat, huh?

We are starting this week with all the stuff that we all have but don't use regularly, videos, dvds, special plates and decorations and such.

I have two people who should be getting me boxes from their work (plumbing store and gift shop, so they should be strong). Biggest problem is that with my back injury, I can't move any of the boxes once packed. That's where my friends (God bless them) come in. Plus it sucks having to do it alone, so I'm glad they will be here to help.

Status: offline 		Use different colors of tape for different rooms. Red for kitchen, blue for bedroom, black for living room etc. You can find colored tape at most hardware stores and makes placement loads easier. I have hired several moving companys and, frankly, most of them just will not read what's written on the box but tell them that all the red taped boxes go in the kitchen, all the black taped boxes are living room and clear tape is for the bathroom etc. and it's all good. If you run out of colors then you can mix and match. Blue/red goes into bedroom one, blue/green is for bedroom 2 etc. Hope that helps you as much as it has me. Since I started using color coding, I rarely have to move a box into another room. :)

Be ruthless, get rid of stuff! 

Edited to add:  Oops, I didn't read the whole thread before posting and missed your reply to Aileen.  (It's still good advice, though, lol)  

If you have any friends in the medical field, hospitals and medical facilities get great boxes in and tons of them.  Most of them are really sturdy, many have little holes in the sides for handles and sometimes even protective dividers for glassware, packing peanuts, absorbent material, etc.  Plus, it's always fun to have people see you moving boxes that say things like "DANGER-CORROSIVE", "FLAMMABLE MATERIAL", "BIOHAZARD" "ACID", 'VAGINAL SPECULUMS", etc. on them, lol.

Status: offline 		I just moved two weeks ago, and I would just agree with the poster who said start NOW! It will take far longer than you think. I tried to do a room at a time as much as possible because it was more positively reinforcing to see something complete than something half done. I wish I had read BitaTruble's suggestion about the different colors of tape before moving as I think that would have been enormously helpful. If you have a chance to do some moving before the final move, I like to move all the kitchen stuff and bathroom stuff early (keeping just the barest necessities behind) so that I can have those rooms functional before the final move.
