For me, role play is more situation then character.

In the relationship I was in, he had a difficult time being rough with me and I definitly didn't try to fight him on anything sexual...being kidnapped for the weekend as a sex slave opened things up for both of us allowing us to explore a different side of our sexuality.

It was actually that experience that opened the door to D/s for me.

Just a thought for those who either shun or denigrate role play, and way left field as far as the spirit of the discussion regarding role play, but still in the ball park. For me and based on personal experience, is real life role play and I do mean 24/7 week in and week our for months if necessary, living the life of a person who has nothing to do with you in reality. Of course I am referring to undercover operations, the most dangerous form of role play where the chances of capture (Real Life) hard torture and even death (not always slow either), is a daily reality. The better you are the more chance you will live to report back and the better chance some sod will expect you to go back again and again until you too are captured. The ultimate adrenaline rush, the fastest ageing process, the maker of long term nightmares and the fucker up of living a normal social life after.

Just my view and opinion based on painful reality.

The costuming can be fun. I'm not normally going to wear a plaid miniskirt and shirt tied at midriff. We've done school teacher and naughty schoolgirl.

Doing something through role play can identify emotional triggers. It's less overwhelming if it happens during a roleplay than if you decide to enact the risky situation for real. Rape play for example, by saying "Here you are asleep and I break in and do this to you" if she reacts badly you can stop and address things immediately that won't happen if you really do break in during the night when you assume her reactions are normal and won't cause problems after.

We've talked about a football player and cheerleader scene where the tease of the cheerleader gets her comeuppance from the line backer under the bleachers. In this case under the porch which would just happen to have a blanket laid out to avoid any possible poison ivy interaction.

In addition role play can be a way to try things to see how you react as well as a way to work out an old issue. Psychodrama if you will.
