Some of my friends think highly of WOW.

Status: offline 		If you like First Person Shooters or FPS's Counterstrike is thee game to play, or you can try any of the multi player WWII or modern combat games.

WoW is fun, but addicting, and the cost add's up with the monthly subscription, you can play Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) for free, and it's almost as good, some say better than WoW. There's also Runescape, which is also free to play.

The name "Counterstrike" is ringing a few bells here.
Can that be played in clans?

Would not mind getting a good oldfashioned table size game of AD&D (TSR thrid edition Rules) together.

Status: offline 		Im reliably informed by my kids that Playstation and Xbox online games are excellent and easy to play.

As to WHAT games are good?

Dunno.

Given that most Video stores hire out these console games and the consoles as well it might not be a bad thing to pop off to your local blockbuster, hire a console and ask the clerk whats popular coz they usually know these things being spotty, young and often more than a tad geeky.

BTW if longevity is any measure of goodness then WoW is the best, Its been around for years and is still popular.

As far as what game, it depends, really.

Infinity Ward released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in November of 2007.. After that, Treyarch released Call of Duty: World At War (November 2008), then last November (November of 2009), Infinity Ward released Modern Warfare 2.

Counterstrike & Modern Warfare are pretty similar: There's two opposing forces (terrorists/counter terrorists in CS, Marines & OpFor in MW)

In Counterstrike you can buy weapons & accessories before the round starts - dual Desert Eagles, body armor, etc.
In Modern Warfare, you can pick "classes" that have pre-assembled load outs. When you get to a certain level (8, if i remember right) you can design your own load out.

There's a variety of weapons, everything from rifles (M4, M16,G36) to SMGs (AK47's, MP5's, Uzi's) to heavy machine guns (RPD, SAW) shot guns (M1101) and sniper rifles (m4a103, barrett .50 cal, R700).

You can also equip "perks" such as radar jammer, bandolier (extra ammo), martydom (you drop a grenade when you die and hopefully take out your killer with you), dead silence (you make NO sound whatsoever, even when running)

Personally, Modern Warfare 2 was a steaming pile of horse ****. They took out a lot of things that made it a "PC" game. Dedicated servers to watch cheaters - gone. Console commands to run the game at "ultra high" settings (such as: aspect ratio) - gone. It's more like a 60 dollar console port, for PC.

The cheaters are rampant - you have Valve Anti-Cheat to thank for that. Usually servers were policed by active players & admins. Valve uses VAC which is a "delayed banning system" which means if you see a cheater, they could be playing for months before they're finally banned from all the servers.

Oh yeah - Call of Duty: World at War has a bonus mode, called "Nazi Zombies" - it's basically an endurance run: unlimited waves of zombies, and as the waves go up, they become harder to kill. It's pretty fun though. :o)

A clan is just a group of people that play the same (or several) games together. More often than not, they have a website that they use to schedule intra-clan matches or set up matches between other clans - called scrims (short for scrimmage)

Some clans play only one game (ie: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare)
Others, like the clan I'm in, play several games (Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty:Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: World at War, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2)

Also, being in a clan has some perks: if a clan rents a game server, sometimes that game server will have password protected slots, that gaurentees a opening for clan members only. If a game server has a capacity for 20 players, there may actually be 24 slots - 20 "pub" slots, and 4 that are passworded for clan members only. If the server is full, then the clan member can plug in the password, and gain entry despite the "pub" slots being full.

Some clans also have a voice communication server - Teamspeak & Ventrilo are two programs used to voice chat when playing. This can be used for banter/talking smack, or for tactics (especially for CTF/Capture the Flag games)

Usually, all clans have a "tag" - or a design in front of their actual gamer name.

For example, my clan is called The WarKings, and our tag is this: |WarKings|

Some clans, have a theme - again, using my clan as an example, our names are based on famous past kings (both real and mythological) - King Arthur, King Charlemagne, King George, King Herod, King Demetrius, etc.

One clan that I used to play in, when I first got into gaming, was called The Dead Presidents - as you can guess, we used names of past presidents, and our clan tag was {TDP}. You had {TDP}Mckinley, {TDP}Monroe, {TDP}Kennedy, etc.

No problem

What type of games do you like? Puzzle? RPG (role playing)? FPS (First person shooters) ?

If you like Puzzle type games, I highly reccomend "Portal"
If you like FPS games, I'd definitely recommend any of the Call of Duty games.
As far as RPG games go, my only experience is with 2: City of Villains/Heroes & World of Warcraft.

Both require a monthly subscription fee, however.

CoV/H is essentially a "comic book" type game - the character you create has superpowers similar to any comic book hero that you remember.

World of Warcraft is very similar to Lord of the Rings (which, incidentally, LOTR has it's own online game as well) - you have humans, dwarves, mages/magicians, paladins & priests.

Playing with a clan can definitely be fun

It really depends on what you like. Grand strategy games, I would highly advice on the Total War series. I think everything from Rome Total War and newer is played online (Medieval 2 Total War, Empire Total War and Napoleon Total War). It is really a battle between 2 nations, using troops featured in the games respective time period. You pick out your army from a set of units, usually only available for your nation only. Then you duke it out and hopefully win :) Knowing the time period and the warfare regarding it, helps out a lot. If you are interested in it, but don't want to just skip online, I would advice on looking at PrinceofMacedon's youtube channel to learn more. He does some commentary to all of those games, mostly Rome and Empire/Napoleon. Also some MenofWar which is sort of the same thing, but set in World War 2.

If you want FPS, as said Modern Warfare 2 or Battlefield Bad Company 2. It is sort of the same genre (2 opposing teams, 4 classes to choose from, and you level up. What I like about Bad Company 2, is you get points for helping your teams in different ways other than shooting. Like placing motion sensors. If a friendly kills a baddie in the area of the motion sensor (Which shows enemy movement on the minimap) you get points).

For MMORPG's, well WoW is atm the only "real" game to play. A new expansion is coming out shortly. I've played it a lot, but it just seems to get more and more dumbed down and boring imo. The player base also seems to be more and more in that direction, so it lost my interest. There is hardly any MMO over it anymore, since the teamwork required to do some of the more normal dungeons with random people is close to 0. Other titles to check out in that regard would be Aion, Warhammer and Age of Conan. Warhammer and AoC have been out for a while. Aion is fairly new still (6 months I think, maybe more or less).

If you like some more Red Alert based, where you build up a base, build units and then duke it out. Company of Heroes is a great World War 2 game. There are 4 factions to choose from. USA, British on one side. And Wehrmact plus Panzer Elite on the other. (Paner Elite is the troops primarily used to ward off D-day, Operation Marketgarden etc.). There are 2 modes (I don't have the last expansion, it adds more modes). Annihilation or points. In the points mode, you get some points to hold, then it is a count down. Other than that the map is based off zones, that gives fuel, ammunition and strategic value.

I would say a FPS game or a strategy game would be the least time consuming to be honest. Bare in mind, WoW can be very addictive.

Oh yes, have to agree with you here on this one. Armorgames makes very incredible online games that are just fun to pass the time with. Here are two of my favorites.

Sydney Shark (You play a rampaging shark who can attack everything from low flying airplanes and helicopters to the local swim team and deep sea divers. You do this while getting great sound effects complete with lots of flash and occasionally the news crew, cruise ships or Steve Irwin yelling at you. lol http://armorgames.com/play/5734/sydney-shark

Status: offline 		Ultima Online, City of Heroes, Everquest (1 and 2), Aion, Darkfall, Age of Conan, Dark Age of Camalot, Lineage (1 and 2). Some of the better online games out(rpgs). Ultima Online was the first MMO ever and started in 97. All of them are good, Aion and Darkfall are the newest out. Darkfall is fun but it's rough sometimes.

Croc is my favorite. The interesting thing is it's different every time you play depending on which treatments you decide on.
