................. escaped about 6 years ago and lived in the bathroom (there was a hole in the wall he made a nest in) - anyhoo, i fed and watered him for a while, stopped seeing him around after a bit and decided he had to have died. last night i was up really late, the cat was bouncing around, as he does and i didnt pay much attention to him and then i saw this pale little fluffy body stretched out on the carpet still breathing. its Tyson - i dont believe it - i rescued him, put him somewhere quiet thinking he'd die in the night, but he isnt where i left him, so he must have recovered and got going again!! how long do hamsters live for anyway!!

They live to be about 2-3 years old. I'd be more inclined to believe that what you found could be Tyson Jr. :)

Makes you wonder where Tyson Sr found a mate....perhaps there is a secret society of escape hamsters living on the fringe of our society, awaiting their chance at world domination. Either that, or Tyson is a freak mutant hamster with an elongated life span, due to some toxic substance he happened upon in your bathroom.

[:D] - well whatever he's found in my bathroom to elongate his life for this long has to be good, i shall find it and patent it!!! maybe he's been helping himself to my multi vits - does make you wonder though, if maybe these little furry beasties would live longer if we didnt keep them trapped in a soulless cage with nothing to do all day - which is clearly a lesson to be learnt for anyone planning to keep a sub caged without a wheel to run in [:)]

If he's a mutant hamster, then I want in on some of that life-prolonging toxic substance! He better not hold out on us :D Depending on when Tyson escaped, I'd think he was actually a young pregnant Tysonette. I've had rodents for many years, and the larger pet stores usually sell them very young before sex can be properly determined...and of course, not too young that they haven't already been doing the horizontal hamster dance. :P This may also explain the hamster escaping the cage. If proper nesting is not provided while they are pregnant, or if the rodent is not pleased with the cover and privacy of what they do have, they will look elsewhere. I had a certain picky mommy mouse that was not happy with the usual nesting house that I already had, and instead broke out and set up shop in an old starter cage I had in my downstairs closet. She did this several times with her various litters.

that was such a cute story! [:D] I have a house rabbit who is very, very old now. I tried to register her with a new vet when I moved house, and they asked how old she was. I said she's a couple of months short of 11 years old. I've had her since she was 6 weeks old. The vet would not believe me, but checked her out anyway. Turns out that apart from some arthritis in her back legs and slightly overgrown back teeth (a problem she's had during her entire life) she's as healthy as a...well...rabbit! [:D] I like to think that Tyson the hammie was just holding out until he could find his beloved mamma again, lol!

[:D] I like to think that Tyson the hammie was just holding out until he could find his beloved mamma again, lol! thats amazing, im not sure how long rabbits go on for, but 11 sounds pretty ancient - [:)] Squidgy had been playing for about half an hour, which isnt unusual, he plays with himself constantly [&:] - and then i saw Tyson or Tysonnettes grandchild lying on the carpet next to where i was sitting - like he'd somehow managed to get to where i could see him and rescue him, all puffed out and in shock. but no puncture marks that i could see and i wondered if actually it was old age that had got him and squidgy just got lucky - he's crap at catching things if theyre nippy on their feet. ah well, id like to think its Tyson too - but its also kindof nice to think i might have his or rather her descendants in residence.

YAY!!!! I love to hear stories like this. It would be highly unlikely that it is an offspring if the animal looks the same. Did you have pics of Tyson before his disappearance? I do think animals live longer if allowed to just be. There are some wild chickens that live beside a freeway in a nearby town that continue to thrive no matter how many times they are rounded up and hauled off. I love seeing that happen. YAY Tyson!
