numuncular -> the most important thing in the whole world bar none... (5/29/2010 6:02:20 PM)

...is the world cup of course.

this being an majority north americans (seemingly at least) forum the sheer magnitude of this probably is alien to a lot of people reading this but. ITS THE WORLD CUP!!! a whole month of wall to wall football literally bringing nations to a halt. and to add a little spice on the 2nd day of the tournament england take on team USA, in what should be a wholly one sided encounter, though stranger things have of course happened.

who else is feeling the tingle of excitement?

(map of countries that enter: all those in red or green. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2010_world_cup_qualification.png two countries in grey dont have a national team and a couple of countries in purple didnt enter)

Hmmm what happened the last time these two teams met?

Yeah, I'm seeing forecasts here and there that the USA has a very good chance of beating England.

That, and there is a guy on one of the other teams named "Kaka". That's what I know about it.

england won 2-0 the last time they met

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=238507&cc=5739

don't get me wrong, the result is far from certain and most teams have a chance of beating most other teams, but anything other than a comfortable england win would be regarded as a shock. I'm sure US press will have to talk up their chances, and rightly so since to do otherwise about ones own country would be absurd, but england despite their deficiencies have some of the best players in the world in their positions (wayne rooney, frank lampard, steven gerrard, ashley cole) USA frankly: don't, though do have some good players (clint dempsey has scored some wonder goals for fulham this season, landon donovan was impressive in the 3 months he spent here this year) but some poor players too (jozy altidore played the last season in england the previous ones in spain and looked absolutely terrible in both)

england won't win it though, thats a step too far. expect to see great things from brazil, spain and the netherlands. expect to see lionel messi dazzle the world playing for argentina and for them to do well despite the bizarre mismanagement of diego maradonna

Was that a world cup game?

well no, but the game you are referring to was a long, long, long time ago and it'd be a bit of a stretch to suggest it has any relevance to june 12th (other than a forewarning of what will happen to englands players if they approach the game with a casual and/or arrogant attitude towards victory), whereas the game in 2008 does.

nah, we beat australia in the ashes last summer, and won the 20/20 cricket world cup a few weeks ago which is almost only played against former colonies! as far as football goes the only bad results that spring to mind with "colonies" is that game in the 50's and a game against australia a few years ago

anyway, enough of that, what I really want to know is, do you north americans have any concept of quite how massive the world cup is?

kdsub -> RE: the most important thing in the whole world bar none... (5/29/2010 8:29:40 PM)

We know...after all our girls are pretty good. But there is only one kind of football in the States and it isn't one where grown men cry and beg for a penalty.

I'm not sure why but soccer is mostly a children's game here. I like it and wish there were more coverage. And I do wish you luck...if we can't win it I hope you or Canada does.

canada will really struggle to win it since they went out in qualifying last year!

thats very kind of you but realistically, USA has no chance of winning it (there are probably 20 better teams in the tournament....), and england has only an outside chance (there are 4 or 5 better teams).
If I was a betting man, and I am though I rarely bet on football, my money would be on spain or holland. spain completely outclassed england when we played them last year and I can't see any reason why that wouldn't be repeated if the fixture happend at the world cup

Canada?!!?? Hey I am as patriotic as the next guy, but Canada doesn't have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning.

pfffffft I assume you mean rugby? you're comparing a world cup in which 95% of the worlds nations is involved to one in which what, 15%? of the worlds nations has entered...
though of course my englishness and the consequent entanglement into the class system dictates that I must hate rugby.

Long may it continue that football is unpopular in the US, long may it continue that the Americans wont know about or take much interest in the World Cup, or even be aware or bothered when their team finishes last in round 1, having gone down to England, Algeria and Slovenia and shows a goal difference of -20.

All this so they dont have to go through the agony that is the penalty shoot out.

LadyEllen -> RE: the most important thing in the whole world bar none... (5/29/2010 11:55:21 PM)

'ang about a bit - the BBC Breakfast show just covered a Californian college that runs a course on footie and said that footie is the 2nd most popular participant sport in the US, after basketball - that semi-organised brawl (you know, the one where the big nancies wear armour and helmets to play what is to all intents rugby) known as American football comes in a distant third at 7 million participants.

soon it seems, very soon, the American public at large shall know the joys of chanting such match hits as "the referee is a wanker", "youre not singing anymore" and exclaiming at the top of their voices such catchphrases as "that was never offside", "get up you fuckin' baby" and the all time favourite "penalty!".

OOH I love the world cup.

What a great opportunity to thin out the herd.   A perfect self eugenics- natural selection plan~!

GO TEAMs!

Amen to that.

I adore the world cup, I am pretty sure England will make me cry as they always always always do, but I will still sit there and watch every nail biting second.

Sorry folks, Stanley Cup finals are more important. And last night was weird, I've never seen a hockey game that high scoring that early on before.

ShoreBound149 -> RE: the most important thing in the whole world bar none... (5/30/2010 6:35:01 AM)

Soccer and Nascar didn not exist among the men folk where I grew up in New Jersey.  Never acquired a taste for them either.  That being said, you're post inspired me to check with my bookie.  Sure enough......he's got World Cup action.  I locked in to Slovenia in a "pick em" over Algeria.
