I always think of BLT sandwhiches and watermellon as "summertime food."
When I was a kid they didn't really have lettuce and tomatoes in the winter in Boston.
Here in S. Carolina they sell giant watermellons out of the back of trucks on the roadsides and in store parking lots for five bucks! They should be doing that in a few weeks and we should be having fresh peaches any day now.
What foods do you associate with "summertime?"

Salads mostly. Anything on the grill is always good and lots and lots of ice water.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Summertime foods (5/28/2010 11:56:53 AM)

Homemade goat-milk ice cream, made with whatever fruit happens to be in season at the time. (Right now it's strawberries and peaches!!!)

Tomatos marinated in rice wine vinegar, cracked peppercorn and fresh chopped basil.
Fresh, homemade jalapeno poppers (my own special recipe).
Creamed peas.
Corn on the cob and ribeye steak, fresh off the grill.

Yeah, big garden every year can make for good eating. :)

Fresh berries, raspberries ( when I pick them, I eat as many as make it inside ), strawberries, blackberries..
Sweet corn.......omg Iowa sweet corn is the best.
BBQ
Peaches, fresh off the tree and warm from the sun.
Tomatoes fresh from the vine and still warm from the sun.
Home made potato salad.
A bowl of cold cottage cheese.......don't know why but summer is the only time I eat it.
Fried squash blossoms......omg if you've never had them, you have no idea what you are missing.

I sooooo miss living in the midwest.  Fresh picked straight to the grill sweet-corn,  picking berries, wow ...

Chunky Gazpacho...I make my own without a recipe.  It starts with 6-8 fresh tomatoes as a base that I puree in the food processor then it goes wild.  I like it spicy so that means a healthy dose of tobasco or hot sauce.

Grilled peaches and fresh goat cheese.

Burrata with honey from a local beekeeper

Tomatoes and basil from my garden with some fantastic green/peppery organic olive oil

Garlic scape pesto

Cold rare roast beef on buttered bread with red onions and horseradish sauce. Toasted pitta bread filled with prawns, lettuce tomatoes and thousand island dressing. Caesar salad with chicken and bacon and too many croutons eaten in the garden. Tiny lamb chops cooked slowly in a massalla sauce.
Home made southern comfort ice cream, mix a tub of thick cream in a blender with soft white ice cream and a dash of southern comfort, put it in a freezer to stiffen up and serve it with chopped peaches.
fresh cherries eaten under the tree. Tiny new potatoes served hot with butter and torn mint. Fresh roast leg of pork served hot with a puree of ripe peaches.
fresh picked raspberries served on a meringue with thick cream.

summer drinks
Pimms and lemonade. sangria. cointreau and lemonade. cheap champagne and orange juice. expensive champagne and strawberries, cheap italian spumante wine served with peach juice. Ice cold german lager with lime. earl grey tea. Chilled coffee with hazelnut syrup. massive pitchers of jack daniels and coke with sliced oranges and lemons.

Seafood.
BBQ.
Salads.
Mangoes, Watermelon and Stone Fruit.

itsmeinLV -> RE: Summertime foods (5/28/2010 6:22:30 PM)

Chilled watermelon!  We'd make melon ball-size holes in them and fill the watermelon with rum and chill in the freezer.  In the triple digits heat, nothing beats that!  :)~

OMG is right. Stuffed fried squash blossoms too, with goat cheese and a chunky heirloom tomato salsa with them. Damn I want some now. Pretty much everything on your list is on mine. Good taste.[:)]. The only thing I would add is lobster, steamed or grilled, and steamers with butter. Lots of homemade sangria too.

Vendaval -> RE: Summertime foods (5/28/2010 10:32:20 PM)

Summer fruits like peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries and melons. Salads of all kinds and bar-b-que. Corn on the cob and watermelon. Jello!

sunshinemiss -> RE: Summertime foods (5/28/2010 10:38:32 PM)

Summer foods -
Prickly Pear. I don't know why, but yeah... tacos pescados and a pitcher of margaritas...

and tomatoes. *groan*

Farmer's Markets. Love them.

And lemonade made in the shade.

Iced tea.
... and coffee - iced coffe (not that sweet stuff... just cold coffee. Make a pot Sat. morning and put it in the fridge.

(I'm all about the drinks evidently)

and cold cold water.

Did they really? That is awesome! I always expect big strawberries to be kind of tastless, usually I look for small, wonderful smelling, yeilding ones.

There are reasons I don't live in So. Cal.

giant watermelons, in summertime, are a buck or so at roadside stands, here. For five bucks, in the grocery, you can get the smaller, super sweet, unbelievably fucking good, 'personal watermelon' the size of a basketball. My mom brought one home for dinner tonight - the whole of dinner. Yum.

Already got in green onions for the table. Cant wait for real tomatoes to come from the garden.
