I am shopping for a used vehicle for my soon to be a high school graduate offspring. I have been scouting Craigslist for about the last week and a half. I found one possible candidate this morning and called this morning about 11:30am to see if it was still available and to get some additional information that was not in the advertisement. The gentleman answered the phone with a very thick Indian or Pakistani (or somewhere nearby - it really doesn't matter) accent. When I could barely understand him say "four cylinder" I knew where this was headed.

I told him that I was very interested in coming by to see the car and it would be about 4:00pm before I could do so. He said that would be fine or at least I think he did. I asked for the address so that I could enter it into Google Maps and get directions since I was at home at the time. He said just to call before I arrived and he would give me the address. I reluctantly agreed and now was ever so sure how this would end.

I called him on the way home from picking up said offspring to get directions.

"Are you using GPS?"

"No, sir. That is why I asked for your address this morning while I had access to a computer to get directions."

Halfway through the directions I had to interrupt him, thank him for his time and end the call. There was absolutely no way he was going to be able to give me the directions in any manner I could understand. The sad thing is that he has been trying to sell this car all week. I have seen three separate ads he has placed for it. It is exactly the make and model I am looking for in the exact price range I am looking for. I have cash in hand. The car would likely be sitting in my driveway right now and we'd both be happy campers if he would only have given me the address when I asked. He was only too happy to give it to me when I called back. I fail to see what the difference was.

When I hung up the phone I was so pissed off I could not see straight. Save the "ugly American" lectures. My ex wife already beat you to it years ago and I happen to embrace my ugly American side when it rears its ugly head. It's one of my more endearing qualities.

No question... just needed to vent.

Trying to salvage the situation... since it's on Craigslist, why don't you send him an email saying that you want to see the car and that you need an address before you leave home. This actually is safer for you anyway, so that someone knows where you're going (omg... I'm advocating a "safecall"). It seems like lately there have been a rash of Craigslist killings in the US.

Does your cell phone have a GPS application? Many do now.

Send him an e-mail and tell him 'no deal' unless someone there actually can speak english and give you an address.

If it's craigslist, do send him an email. He now knows you tried to find the place and really do want to see the car. And tell him your available times, and have him pick the time for you to come.

Have you ever sold anything on Craigslist? If you have you might be aware of the fact that the last thing you want to do is give your address to every bozo who calls.

I don't see the problem. He has a car. You can meet anywhere to buy the car. There must be a location or place where you both know where you can meet. I don't understand where someone's nationality or language ability comes into it.

The English language has this wonderful ability in that without knowing much grammar or vocabulary you can throw words together and still communicate. This explains why it's so popular as a second language among people all over the world.

Tigreetsa is right, of course. There's no need for anyone to reveal addresses. Simply pick a public location known by both parties and meet there.

Ive sold several things recently on Craigs list and have had the items picked up from my home. While I delivered another. If he is uncomfy with giving you the adress ask him if he can meet you at a public place like WalMart or something of that nature so that you can meet in the parking lot but I would email him and explain the situation to him.

That's why a lot of people won't give the address until they know you are on the way. The call when your leaving and I'll give you the address is pretty standard for a lot of people on Craigslist.
