The old guard, as they were referred to, were groups of gay leathermen post WWII who had an interest in rough sex. it was secret because until 1969 in NYC and 1970 in San Francisco, homosexuality was illegal and got you arrested. So by the time people could talk about it, was 25 years after it started.

There may be a couple of them still alive, of the ones I knew in the 60's and 70's, none are still active. Most are dead, the others in various care facilities. They're all in their 80s at the youngest.

The Old Guard are a group of soldiers in red and white uniforms and tall, bushy black headgear who stand vigil outside Buckingham Palace in London.  They protect the Queen from insults and thrown wadded-up tourist literature.  Every so often they get tired and a New Guard has to be called in.  The changeover involves lots of precisely choreographed ritual, and if they do not follow this to the letter, they are exposed as Fake (or Newbie) Guards by the real Old Guard , who sometimes watch from behind the shrubbery where they are doing god-knows-what.  It is all very solemn and earnest and most impressive.

BoiJen,

I too have read Andy's works. The term did (as far as I know) originate with him in 1989. It was in many ways a derision on the agism that existed in the leather world at that time, and still does today. It existed before then as well. But keynote phrases take on a life of their own. Not only does "old guard" refer to those specific protecters of that tradition that Andy rebelled aginst in 1989, but (for better or worse) that phrase now refers to all who went before and developed those protocols and rituals.

Accept for some devotee's of strict leather protocol, the phrase in a different world now has taken on a broader definition in that it encorporates those folks that over time produced a somewhat more benign thought that protocols and rituals have their place. It's taken down a more realistic (if watered down) set of protocols.

The intent though is the same...that protocols and rituals help define our communities. In doing so, they help to define us as individuals. That is what the leather community was trying to do...defend those things that made them who they are.

I in my little hetersuxual world have gabbed some of their thinking for my relationships. If used judisously, they can help modern day BDSM relationships. They can add fire to the coals and they can add interest for those who want more than play. Not everything they did would find a home in my world...but they sure got me thinking.

with respect
