Rochsub2009 -> Covert sex researchers? (5/2/2010 5:50:16 PM)

i often see people on this site (and other fetish websites) who have the following text at the end of their profile:

WARNING: Any institutions using this site or any of its associated sites for studies or projects - You do NOT have my permission to use any of my profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future. If you have or do, it will be considered a serious violation of my privacy and will be subject to legal ramifications. It is recommended that other members post a similar notice to this.

Is there any verified instance of an institution using people's profiles without their permission?  If so, who are these institutions, and how prevalent are they?

i see the above warning on so many profiles that i assume that there is a genuine reason for the concern.  i just have never heard the genesis of this issue.  Does anyone know  why this was started, or do you know of anyone who was actually burned by some type of sex research institution using parts of their profile?  Personally, i don't think i know of anyone whose profile was used by a university or research institution.  Moreover, i'm not sure i see the harm in it.  It's not like they are doing a "Dateline NBC - To Catch a Kinkster" show that is going to be aired on primetime TV.  So what's the big deal?  I'm not sure i really care whether the University of Montana Sex Education Department uses my profile.  Moreover, does putting one of these warnings in our profile actually prevent them from violating our privacy?  Just curious.

I have seen that too. Thats why My profile begins with an invitation for those folks to feel free to use My profile.

I will help further education in any way I can.

i'm not sure if you're joking here, Jeffff.  But i'll assume that you are serious, and i'll agree with you.  IMO, anything that can help the population-at-large understand us better is a good thing.  i don't think that their research can make the public perception of WIITWD any worse.

Jeffff -> RE: Covert sex researchers? (5/2/2010 5:57:31 PM)

Ummmm, yeah I was joking.

Every time I see it I think, "How important do people think they are?"

Add the fact that if someone wanted to, they could just take it, the warning seems silly to me.

You know, I hear this a lot on collarme. The impression that vanilla's think that you kinksters are all awful people. I knew NOTHING about BDSM up to perhaps 3 years ago. And you know what? I also had no opinions. It just wasn't on my radar. The fact that all you folks even existed was just not visible to me. So now here I am, still vanilla in terms of BD or SM. And my considered opinion about WIITYD is, "not my cup o' tea". That's it.

I don't claim to speak for vanilla society as a whole. But I can guarantee you that the goings on of all you kinky deviants were never once in 43 years a topic of conversation for this vanilla guy. Had someone brought it up, my response probably would've been something akin to, "Wow, that's weird". When something isn't a part of your world, it's just not a part of your world.

Oooooooh, I hadn't considered that before, but I totally agree with that.
I'll have to put in a similar notice in my profile now.

Not that I think that there actually are research institutions out there who actually use profiles like this for scientific studies (and if there are I hope the students conducting them get a well deserved F for using material as untrustworthy as the profiles on this site...)
Other than that, I don't think putting a disclaimer like that in your profile actually saves you from having your info used, because -I think- that CollarMe actually has the rights to that info once you post it on their site...

Either way, I'm always up for promoting openness and learning... and for pointing out to all those people putting in disclaimers like that that it really, really looks very silly... [8|]

I doubt posting that warning will keep people from using your information if they want to, but it might help out in court if you find out about it and choose to sue them, although even that is doubtful.

DesFIP -> RE: Covert sex researchers? (5/2/2010 6:43:35 PM)

Anything put up on the internet in an open forum like this is by definition public, not private.
However in this case, it's a rumor going around. University of Sydney does not have students studying the site. This has come up before and I can't find a link but I remember it being disproved.

GraciousLady -> RE: Covert sex researchers? (5/2/2010 6:46:33 PM)

Since this is a public forum I doubt you can stop anyone from using anything you post. But, I can't see any serious science using our profiles for research as none is really verifiable. Maybe some sort of research into fantasy internet lives because all the info is unverifiable? IDK? Are we really that interesting?

do you know of anyone who was actually burned by some type of sex research institution using parts of their profile?

I don't know anyone who was burned, and I don't know of any CM profiles in specific being targeted by anywhere.  WebPersonals has been:

One hundred personal advertisements placed by college students from all fifty states were downloaded from the Webpersonals (www.Webpersonals.com), a website which advertises itself as a "free internet `dating' service that reaches all the corners of the Earth." The Webpersonals site was chosen as the source of ads for several reasons. First, Webpersonals, which is owned by the Interactive Media Group (IMG), has been an innovator in providing dating services both over the telephone and internet.

The most commonly warned-against organization is Sydney University, which recently administered a major survey of the sexual habits of Australians.  However, it appears to me (after reading of some of their abstracts) that their methodology was telephone interviews, not downloading of personal ads.  So this might be a concern without basis in fact.  Who knows.

I do think it's highly likely that students, in classes, write papers about CM profiles.  There are regular posts on the boards requesting info for essays.  Officially funded scientific studies using kink profiles?  Not so much.
