Right Now, I am in the Catbird Seat. I have Free Cable TV and Free High Speed Data. (I work for the Cable Company). However I see that my job might be in Jeopardy because these dumb ass managers are demanding that I sell services to angry customers. Nor do they get that they have a Sales department, A Telemarketing Department and a Direct Sales (Door to Door sales) department that makes my little tech support department of 40 pale in comparison. I am not sure how they expect a department that is set up to handle customer complaints and resolve service issues to sell anything, when you have over 200 people that are set up to sell services? Anyway to the Point of my post. You know that it is totally possible to receive free internet and free tv. with out The Cable Company, Direct TV, Dish TV etc and so on. I know there have to be other people out there that are doing it, so what tricks or tips do you have for someone who might be needing to do it in the future?

Link your computer to those of two neighbors. Ask them to link their computers to another two neighbors and to ask them to repeat the same.

I dumped that bill a while ago. Tho I do pay DSL. $14.99.

I can see how it might be difficult to up sell to a customer who is pissed because the cable company can't even get the stuff he already purchases to work properly. I've had Comcast for about nine months now - digital cable and high speed internet - and I like it pretty well. The only complaint that I have is that the door to door dude who sold it to me clearly said unlimited in regard to the high speed internet several times when I spoke to him. Of course, this is not the case - there is a bandwidth cap and nowhere in the literature that was provided to me after the sale does it say unlimited. In the end I guess the cap is a good thing because without it I would be what my girlfriend calls a "cyber hoarder". Performance wise my cable and high speed internet kick ass. I recall a local cable company here years ago shutting off the cable to a large apartment complex once during the Super Bowl. They were certain that a large number of people were getting free cable that they were not paying for and they were also certain that these people were not bright enough to remember not to call to complain. They were correct on both counts and busted a lot of folks that day but as you might guess it was a public relations nightmare for them.

Just swallow your pride and make a perfunctory sales pitch once you reslove the caller's problem.

I worked for a large cable company years ago. I received a huge discount on all that I had at home. I was subsequently laid off and had to pay regular prices. I dropped off the services that I did not need, kept those that I wanted. Go ahead, try to link your cable to your neighbor. You may not get caught for awhile but there will come a time when you will. It's inevitable. I came across many an "account" that had illegal hookup or customers who were too damn idiotic to keep their mouths shut. It's much tougher to keep a lie straight than it is the truth. Making sales is never easy. I know of which I speak as we were asked (in rather unforgiving terms) to do just that. I worked on the customer service side of things. My "job" as far as I was concerned was to help the customer who called to get the proper assistance. I didn't worry about sales, I didn't care. That wasn't what I was hired to do. Didn't worry about not getting a commission, the customer was my #1 priority. I came into the work force when that was still important. It was and is how I comport myself to this day. My job reviews every few months reflected that. I represented the company I worked for and took pride in that. I was one of the few who did. I would do it all over again if I had to. Just my 2 cents worth.

There is nothing unreasonable or hard that you are being asked to do. Don't think of it as selling. Think of it as trying to make your customer happy. Hopefully when you get that angry, abusive customer you are able to resolve their issue and make them satisfied, if not happy. At this point do not try to sell them anything. Be polite and friendly and find out if there is anything else that they need. Ask them if they know about your VOIP service or if they have enough bandwidth for their needs. They may only have 1 meg or whatever your minimum is and not realize that their downloads from netflix or hulu would look better at a higher speed. That is just being helpful.

Back when I lived in Manhattan the idiot who lived below me used to tap into the cable, ruining the line for the rest of us. We would complain and tell them where the theft was taking place. But the cable company never got a court order to go in when he wasn't there, and prove it. Instead they had to give him notice they needed access to prove his theft. At which point he would unhook it before letting them in. Day after day, week after week. Until he thankfully got arrested for drug dealing. Then we got a couple years off from listening to him beat his wife and scream incoherently.

Maybe some of the replies were in response to this my post. If so, then notice that I never suggested to illegally hook up to any cable. My suggestion was to make your own network.

TV reception is completely free to anyone with an antenna. If one is too poor to purchase the antenna, my son made a great one out of coat hangers. What is really neat about getting TV via antenna is that every program is high definition.

I turned my cable off..Not like there was a lot on anyway. When I did watch it was usually a few favorite channels of which I don't miss that much. Now I stream netflix from my computer to my tv along with the movies in the mail(I'm big on movies). It's not free but most of the time I think it's worth it. Most of the time. There are a number of free tv software programs out but most are foreign..Not totally sure how legal it is for the streamer to stream the video feed to you through the programs. I would imagine it is in fact against copyright laws. Streaming is in and going to get more available as time goes on. I think one of the big cable giants have a program where you can buy channel packages so you can watch from your computer.
