Are our friends in the UK ready for the digital revolution?

Well, that posted before I was ready... Been reading up on the digital radio situation over there. http://www.charleswest.org/?p=431 Not as Green a move as some might like, not to mention just a general pain in the ass edict by Big Brother, or a step into the future?

Hi Level, I really dont know what to make of the governments thinking on this issue. The whole of Europe will be digital by 2012 (I think). Digital sound doesnt degrade over time, like analogue does. It is also possible to send more digital services in the same size spectrum as analogue. So in many ways it makes sense. The downside for me is it wont reach every household in the UK, due to the topgraphy of the land. It also means radies that are analogue will become obsolete, so how does throwing many thousands of radios away help with the "Green" process. I have also heard that digital requires more pwer for the receiver, so that means more electricity has to be produced. Maybe it is just another poorly thought out gimick by the Labour party, maybe not. I am undecided on this one. Here is a link which helps explains the issue. http://www.digitaltelevision.gov.uk/

Indeed [&o] I do have a digital TV but it won't get any f****** signal here...so I had to sign up to damn pay TV [>:][>:][>:] as my 8 channels were cut down to three and at the end to just 1 (which was "exciting" channel 4[>:]) On about 4 days per year or so I got digital channels....but all other days not and once my channels kept disappearing I had no desire to wait for those 4 days per year where I would be able to get TV... so having a Digital TV and "being ready for it" does not necessarily mean you will actually access it in your area [&o]

Thanks Ps and Pheonix; I understand the concerns. We just went through the digital TV rigamarole here, but have mostly muddled through. I'm not sure if/when they'll push the radio aspect here, though.

You are welcome Level. I personally am not involved with pros and cons such as politesub, however for me so far it is cons as now I pay 15 bucks a month I never had a desire to pay on top of their installation fees...and whilst I can spend money at times, I do hate it when I waste it which it is in my view in such an aspect. However, as I am hoping to move later this year once I graduate and get a graduate job, I do hope to get access at my new place and be able to get rid of pay TV again...just don't like it to pay for things which I should not have to pay for...

In the UK we are very digital. It makes it possible to get wrong station far more efficiently. Marvellous. Bring on the square wheels matron! - we're ready.

I fitted a DAB stereo in my car for when they switch, I haven't yet got the aerial for it though. I don't like the idea of sticking it to my windscreen because my windscreen has a billion tiny crack in and I know I'm going to have to get it replaced at some point. I hear there is this splitter thing you can get but the reviews have been poor. So now it either makes this 'blibidy blibidy' like noise or is totally silent, so I have it on FM still.
