It is exactly this kind of garbage that makes a person like me an atheist.

It's a shame that someone like you can't see that the actions of a few do not reflect on the whole group. That kind of attitude is why I find it very difficult to take your posts seriously.

slvemike4u -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/23/2010 7:38:47 PM)

Just a quick and a very general reply....and with the disclaimer that I am a Catholic(a very very lapsed Catholic...but a Catholic all the same)
Okay the whole "Jews killed Jesus" is really too silly to reply to.....but I have nothing better to do so what the f....
Jesus was crucified in fulfillment of the scriptures...it's way too late and it's been way too long a day for me to be citing scripture...but did not Jesus tell Pilate himself that he held no actual power....did not Jesus,in his moment of doubt and fear, ask his father while praying in the garden of Gethesemane to take this cup from his lips.Everyone had a role to play and if Christians believe their scriptures then know even Judas was nothing more than a tool in the master plan.....so no blame for the Jews, nor for the Romans
The question of where are Christians in reply to these idiots from the Westboro Baptist Church...well the answer is right where theu are supposed to be....please show me one mainstream Catholic or Christian organization that stands next to these assholes.
Don't blame Catholics nor Christians...we bear as much responsibilty for these idiots as Jews do for Jesus....or Islam does for 9/11 !!!!!!

These people are crazy. If they want to live in a backwards ass theocracy they should move to Afghanistan so we can bomb them.

I'd totally counterprotest with "my fag friends hate Jehovah too" signs if I still lived in the US.

Musicmystery -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/23/2010 8:00:27 PM)

Jesus also forgave them--"Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."

Apparently, not good enough for some Christians.

They don't care. Their position is that all problems are America's acceptance of gays...

Kinda sounds like the same attitude certain vocal atheists have toward religion.

Ok. Crazy idea here. These people live to piss people off. They live for the confrontation. Now the bike guys do fine and honorable work, but they don't seem to producing any change.

If it is God's alleged hatred of homosexuality that drives their beliefs, how about giving the local Gay Pride outfit a permit for a charity kissing booth right next to their area?

How well do they handle being provoked?

The local university's Pride group does that.  Each year during Pride week they take pledges based on how many of Phelps' group shows up to protest.  They always send him and his church a nice thank you card afterwards.  [:)]

While that sounds all peechy keen and all(no pun intended...lol)...not sure that solves the problem of these guys disrupting military burials....a gay kissing booth might be just as off-putting to the families of the fallen heroes as the presence of the assholes doing "god's work".[8|]

TheHeretic -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/23/2010 10:16:05 PM)

That's what the guys on bikes are there for.

slvemike4u -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/23/2010 10:19:43 PM)

Yeah...so how exactley does the kissing booth help....I'm just trying to understand your thinking here....I mean other than getting PA a date, how does one more distraction at one of these tragic settings help?

Termyn8or -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/23/2010 11:11:41 PM)

Why wouldn't you want to kill them ?

That's right, admit it. If you want to hurt someone you want to kill them unless you are a real sadist, and I don't mean the fun kind.

I was going to elaborate but suffice it to say that mankind is part of the animal kingdom. Sometimes we see animals kill their own kind for reasons we do not know. And they don't know our's.

If Westboro decides to turn what should be a private thing into a circus, I say we at least create a circus they aren't going to like so well.

Those who participated in the act did so because it was decided way before they were what they were to become by GOD.

If this is true and if God is a loving and merciful God then does it not follow that Judus was an innocent and obedient pawn in god's Plan? Was there not a book on this topic called The Judus Conspiracy or some such?

Hi vincent
I haven't read that book in particular, so maybe there was!  As for Judas, I wouldn't use the word 'pawn' because I personally don't feel it fits from what I have studied - he was an integral part of a puzzle or a bigger picture sure, and a servant - but not a pawn.

One time I got into a discussion with a Catholic and got him to admit that Catholics were not necessarily Christians. I was so full of myself you would have cut me into little pieces. It did wear off quickly though. Easy come easy go.

Careful with that axe Eugene.

Hey, mike, the Westboro folks are against Catholics too.  Catholics, gays, and Jews... if you added in blacks and gypsies, it'd be the same folks that Hitler rounded up.!

No, it really doesn't. They don't show up at funerals to say "Fools! He ain't going to no heaven!" and they don't claim "Soldiers are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and in terrorist acts because you believe in God--it's nature's punishment!"

That some "vocal atheists" -- and I'd really prefer the term "anti-religion," as strongly advocating positions with no God isn't the same as actively targeting the religious -- act obnoxiously (Jesus Zombie Day) on purpose on Easter is over the top, yes, and in poor taste to the point of that being an understatement. I disapprove, strongly.

But the WBC unfairly target innocents (even if they're anti-gay themselves!) during a time of grief. It's wrong. Very, very wrong. It should be illegal. Let people have their funerals in peace.

The "bike guys" aren't trying to change them. They try to ensure the funeral is not disrupted.

Yes, change would mean confronting WBC at every turn. Yet, they thrive on confrontation, as it brings their "cause" to the news.

Perhaps it would be possible to identify their funding sources and boycott all related economic activity. I dunno, though. There's always some with hate and a checkbook.

I think their funding is drying up a bit.
When our local high school was puting on a play about Mathew Sheppard, they informed the media they were attending the opening night to protest. It was all over the news for a week leading up to it. All over local radio stations. Law enforcement set up barricades, and had deputies standing by. When I dropped off my daughter at school that morning, it was a scary situation.
It turned out that there were about 6 of them, and for once, the media did not show them or their signs on tv. I do know that a lot of the hs kids chose to wear rainbow clothes to school that day... just to confuse them..lol.
a lot fuss about nothing.. cause they were basically no shows that day.

Musicmystery -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/24/2010 7:47:31 AM)

That's what they did here---let the announcement create the buzz, and they actually stayed home.

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: The Westboro Baptist church in Colorado (4/24/2010 8:02:51 AM)

I've thought about attacking the sources of their funding. More research is needed. But riddle me this: how does one start an IRS investigation? WBC is a tax-exempt church (503-c, I think). I've always assumed the definition the Feds use to determine such status was fairly narrow. Maybe not. Despite the WBC being very "lawyered-up", an IRS Tax Fraud case could keep them grounded for a while. Just sayin'...
