FelineFae -> Stocking up... food, food, food. (4/15/2010 5:25:50 AM)

It's time to write a grocery list and do a bit of shopping. But i'm finding that i'm burning out on our standard items.
i'm hoping for some insperation, so;

What do you generally buy ?

What types of food did you grow up on ?

Are you curious about any types of food ?

Am i the only person that thinks dry cereals and pet food look alike ?

One of the staples in this house is frozen chicken nuggets, mainly with General Tsao's sauce. It is by far one of the tastiest "I am too lazy to cook tonight" dinners we have ever made. We also keep mixes for things like curries and dips for chips and foods in the pantry. I make sure there is cream of mushroom, cream of broccoli, chicken noodle and cheddar cheese soup in there too for when I get inspired and make chicken and rice and want something as an easy sauce. Ah,  yes, rice too. Brown, microwavable pouches. And the flavored ones that come in pouches, which add water and cook into fantastic dishes.

Conveneince food is, unfortunately, a staple since we both work unpredictable hours from day to day and its a gaurantee we will be able to make something if the prep is minimal.

What do you generally buy ?  Raw milk, farm eggs, canned tuna, tea, coffee, mineral water, meat of some kind and a veggie like brussel sprouts/asparagus/spinach. Those are staples.

What types of food did you grow up on ?  My dad hunted so we had game meat of all kinds, vegetables from a huge garden which we also canned, plums, blackberries and raspberries which we grew and Tollhouse cookies my mom would make and freeze (I still love eating frozen chocolate chip cookies).  Yes, we would suplement with store food but not too often.

Are you curious about any types of food ?  I'm forever curious about food.  I have to admit, though, the more I cook the simpler I want my food to be.

Am i the only person that thinks dry cereals and pet food look alike ?  LOL....no, you're not. [:D]  I always thought the grain we fed our pony looked like grapenuts cereal...trust me, it didn't taste like it![:'(]

I wish our stores delivered.

I need to go- but- with my recent potasium thing- nothing seems appealing-- that is easy to cook.

Brown rice & veggies are now my staples in addition to skim milk, fruit & granola cereal.
Anything else is a luxury.[&o]

i don't buy any packaged, processed foods, or anything with high fructose corn syrup. The only "pantry" items i will buy are pasta, pasta sauce, olive oil, vinegar, flour, raw sugar, salt, dry beans, some canned fruits and veggies (i'm picky about these), chocolate, and the like. i do have one guilty indulgence and that is a chip called "Beanitos" - i'm not sure if you can get it where you are, but they are awesome! Chips made with beans instead of corn, flax seeds, and are gluten free - they are very yummy, taste like chips with bean dip, and very good for you.

Beyond that i buy:
lots of yogurt - cane sugar sweetened, no corn syrup! No Yoplait, organic preferred, and with lots of natural bacterias....mmmm, bacteria....hee hee!
kefir (drinkable yogurt)
chicken breast
olives
romaine lettuce
olive oil salad dressing
parmesan cheese (fresh, not the canned stuff)
eggs
canadian bacon
asparagus
fresh-made mozzerella
lean ham
organic cream cheese
mushrooms

This is primarily what i eat. i only drink water, tea, and wine - and the occasional Guinness (it's good for you!). [:)] i don't eat any bread or rice or any other simple carbs - they make me fat, hee hee! If i'm going to have dessert i have it, but i only eat real sugar - no artificial sweeteners! Nothing diet, processed, "fake" at all. i do take a multivitamin, flax oil, Coenzyme Q10 and a liquid Vitamin B complex supplement every day. If you notice, everything pretty much is "fresh" - this is a yogic diet, and it is very good for you. Your body processes fresh food with more "life energy" much more easily than something that has been pickled, processed, in a can, or on a shelf for long periods of time. i feel amazing, and very healthy.

Have fun shopping![:)]

Always a lot of fresh stuff. I keep several types of fresh fruit in the house at all times, depending on what is in season. Also, there is always a big box of mixed greens in the fridge along with my favourite salad dressing (Neuman's lite balsamic vinegarette).
Usually several types of cheese, feta, moz, swiss, cheddar, whatever caught my eye. Soymilk is a staple. Regular milk depends on whether GD wanted some or not. Almost always some really good, european style plain yogurt.
Always several varieties of different cuts of meat in the freezer. Along with lots of frozen veggies. And usually some frozen, non sweetened fruit to mix in my yogurt.
In the pantry is always brown rice, wild rice, the Kashi mixed grain plain pilaf mix, dry pasta, these yummy oriental noodles that come in a big flat white box with red oriental characters I cannot read all over them....several kinds of beans, olive oil, sesame oil, chili oil, lots of various seasonings, herbs, etc, stuff for baking, oatmeal, GD's white rice, and usually some sort of snack cracker like his nasty Triscuts or my Wheatthins. There better ALWAYS  be good dark chocolate. And both drinking and wine for cooking. Canned chilis, salsas, etc. I almost forgot, raw nuts.

Most of what I buy is ingredients. Very little prepacked, pre-prepared foods. I prefer to either eat simply ( a salad, a veggie with some grill chicken breasts, etc), or cook something from scratch.

What types of food did you grow up on ?

Boring, middle class america, meat and potatoes, garden produce, whatever mom could make to feed a family of 8 that she thought was healthy and inexpensive.

Are you curious about any types of food ?

Very!!! I will try most anything. I love cooking all sorts of things and freaking out some family members with delish stuff they've never tried. I am a fan of Bourdain's show and if he is in Vietnam eating a soup and moaning over how wonderful it is, I will start searching the net for Vietnamese soup recipes and try to make something similar. The net is fabulous for exploring entirely foreign cuisines and finding recipes. I have the ability to imagine what different flavours, herbs, seasonings might taste like and get creative.

Am i the only person that thinks dry cereals and pet food look alike ?

I never thought about it but, yeah. Then again, my dogs eat a food that has a lot of oats and looks like dry oatmeal with parsley and misc other stuff in it.I also, almost never, eat cold cereal so don't see a lot of it.

Frozen food.

I am so sorry Jefff.  A freezer only expands your carbon foot print.

No freezer for YOU.

LAT.

I like your food style.  You ROCK.

DomMeinCT -> RE: Stocking up... food, food, food. (4/15/2010 7:36:21 AM)

For proteins:  Ground turkey (great for meatballs, fajitas) and boneless chicken breasts when it's on sale (marinated in just about anything overnight then grilled)

Instead of the usual regular pasta, I make a lot of side dishes with orzo.  Boil it as per directions, toss with olive oil and sauteed onions and mushrooms, then serve (or bake for 20 min).

Vegetables:  Vidalia onions, red peppers, zucchini, mushrooms.  Toss them with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, then grilled.

Yes, I'd love to learn how to cook Thai food well.

When I don't feel the best-- I go to the retail grocer a mile away.

I really watch what I buy to both eat right and stretch the budget.   Usually the cashier is impressed with how I do.

It is time to hit Aldis and the surplus store- but I am- too- blah to go out right now.

What do you generally buy ? Basmati rice, pasta, potatoes for carbohydrate. Bacon, sausage, chicken legs/wings, spare ribs, mincemeat, lentils, cheese for protein. Tomato puree, garlic, ginger, chilli, herbs & spices for flavouring. Whatever veg is affordable and vibrant-looking when I go to the shops. Green apples. Biscuits. Blackcurrant squash. Choc ices. Poppadoms (I know they are junk, and nowhere near as good as fresh ones, but they are *addictive*, goddamnit!). Pak choi, frozen readymade dumplings (best fast food EVER) and noodles if I can be bothered to walk to the Chinese supermarket.

What types of food did you grow up on ? Iraqi Jewish food (rich, mainly tomato based stews, slow-cooked rice dishes, complete absence of pork products). Curries. Stir-fries. Biiiig roasts for lots of people. Meals are a big deal in my family.

Are you curious about any types of food ? Not really-curiosity is for difficult/complicated things. Food is easy.

Am i the only person that thinks dry cereals and pet food look alike ? Muesli is the work of the devil. So is pet food. [:D]

Spring has sprung around here, so if it isn't fresh, it's crap.  I also work it out so any meal could potentially be cooked outdoors.  Fixing something over an open flame in the "wilds" of the park or whatever just makes it fresh, new, and better.  LOL

Loads of fresh fruits and veggies.  Cheeses because I like them and not because I think they are good for me.  Fresh meats either cut as chops, steaks, etc as well things I can put on skewers and make great kabobs with.  Seafood is amazing on the grill if you have good glazes available.  I also love things like roast corn on the cob and grilled potato wedges with ample seasoning and brushed with olive oil.  Yummy stuff for spring time and usually pretty good on my waistline too!  Oh, and for goodness sakes, don't forget the salads (a huge tub of greens and all kinds of extras cut up to throw together since none of the family agree as to what is good in a salad and a HUGE bowl of fresh fruits chunked and thrown into a bowl for grazing or taking with in the cooler.  I keep bottled water, canned teas, and a little canned soda on hand too.  My goal this time of year is to keep everything mobile in the event I get spontaneous.  That means I keep paper products and grilling supplies on hand as well.

Hope you get to cut your blahs a bit.  I know how monotonous meals can get after awhile.  We have to shake things up every once in awhile.  [:)]
