Hi.  I am wondering what people look for in a place to live.  This evolves thru the decades and phases of life.

What things are musts for your next home?

If you plan to stay put- tell me why?  (as in the features)

I always wanted to live in a camper in the woods. I lived on a boat on the Chesapeake for awhile... Kind of similar... I'd still like to live in a camper in the woods - the lake my back yard. Yep....

What was the boat like?

My brother and I were talking about- and I wont hold my breath, a small farm one day.  He likes McMansions, in the best zip codes- so it was only banter.

I love, love love LOVE my house!!!

Chances are I will only ever do improvements, additions to both house and land, a new horse barn. Someday I will have my vintage Airstream......a mobile little house. Perhaps a small vacation house near my sister in Salida CO.

Given the money GD and I would have many hundreds of acres and a castle. An honest to god, castle. Built on a farm in Iowa. But that will likely never happen. Millions of dollars are lacking....[:D]

My little house on the hill is just perfect.

I always wanted to live in a penthouse suite like the one Zsa Zsa Gabor was ripped from to live on the farm. Also a yaht would be cool too. I love the feel of sleeping on a large boat.

My real life is quite different. But my fantasy life is very active![:D]

I doubt I would leave PA.   I like the way the state is run.

Next- while I want further out- I still want to be with in distance of DRs, Grocers- and so forth.

Retirees make great neighbors.

Rural- small town- will be it.

I have alot of sq ft now- so the next place will be smaller.   Much of my house just is not usable -- well to jittery me.

High priced zip codes- I don't think will work for me-- but nor will too much trash.

Actually the boat was a lot like living in the woods - there are a few people in every marina it seems that are live aboards. I'd do it again if I could. The only down side was I didn't have the boat's heater system set up, so it got too cold for me. It's like a tiny floating apartment. If you can live off a microwave, fresh fruits and veggies and very little refrigerated stuff, the foods not an issue. If you can live on very little electricity, that's easy enough. And if you don't mind having few possessions, you'll be fine. It was a fairly ascetic existence. But the marina's have bathrooms and showers, often they have a t.v. room or at least nearby restaurants. It's a pretty cool way to live - and pretty inexpensive. There are communities of people who do it. If you google "live aboard" you'll find a bunch of info. Mine was a 33 foot sailboat. Small, but doable.

One caveat... if you're claustrophobic, it's probably not a good idea.

I like the camper idea better.  I dont want live in a boat dorm.  LOL.   Im too selfish for that.

Something small like one of THESE , or maybe a yurt.  I like small spaces and the yurt is appealing because I like the idea of "living in the round".  I like the cottage I rent now, about 400 square feet or less, and I plan on staying there until I find an ideal location.

I don't want to settle in Connecticut because the cost of living is so high but I have yet to find a place I really like.  I do need to be not too far from the ocean...or atleast a large body of water. I also want to be able to enjoy all the seasons. I would consider a co-housing situation/intentional community as long as it met my needs. 

My love of small houses has remained a constant, though, from an early age.  I don't see that changing any time soon.

I don't mind some weather change.   Cost of living is important to me.  yet- so is safety.

I am sick of paint.   egads.   And the new paint formula sucks. It is like water colors.

My 'next house' is a dream that will probably never happen. I married a Southerner who wants to retire there after the Army. MY dream is to return to my New England roots and live in a small, ancient colonial. I miss the seasons so much. Alternatively, I would like a yurt on a hill in Homer, Alaska with lots of acreage. However, my husband's plan to retire in a beach house on the Gulf wouldn't entirely suck either.

My next house will be another motor home as I live in ours 24/7.  The one feature I'd really want is a bathtub.  It can be small but it has to be usable for soaking while reading a book.  I never have mastered reading in the shower.  Larger closets and more cupboards are a must.  Last on my list is NO CARPETING.  A nice marble floor would be great.

As soon as I sell my house which hopefully will be by the end of this summer....

my next home will be a rented apartment with hardwood floors, small kitchen, one bedroom or studio, simple, clean lines, no yard so I have no lawn to mow and a landlord who will fix anything that's broken so I never ever have to be concerned with it ever again.

Yeah...I can't wait to get rid of this moneypit!

I'm STILL in love with our house. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. It's a very old house by American standards (1865). This means it has very tall ceilings, original crown moldings and wide pine flooring, gorgeous structure and tons of space... they knew how to build homes back then and our house is a testament to that. My mother, who's an architect, instilled in me the sense for good architecture - I knew as soon as I walked in that house that it was meant to last. Even the creepy granite basement talked to me. It helped that we got it for a bargain.

And so... we moved in on Halloween night last year.
