Imho we could all go nude if parasols and basic manors came back into fashion.
Of corse, were we all nude, no one would question a woman's age in the first place.

This might not be what you're looking for but I wish you could still buy a musclecar. I mean a bigblock V8 with around 400HP, a gas guzzler to be sure, which would mean it's not a daily driver. My first car was literally a racecar with air conditioning. We are talking the 1970s here.

My buddy had a Ford with an SHO (super high output) and it moved indeed. But once the hood was open and I saw it was a V6 my first though was "What if they hadn't left out those other two cylinders ?".

Sorry if I am so technical but there is another thing as well. Knobs. I have an amp and I'm glad I didn't pay for it because I might just have to shoot it. I took it from work, and no, I don't steal. I just told the boss I was taking it and got him to give me some speaker wire. Instead of a knob it has volume up and down buttons. It doesn't work quite linearly and is probably considered "intelligent" in the sense of ergo blastics or something. Well sometimes I like my music LOUD, and I mean as loud as it will go. I want every dime's worth. But then I can't stand distortion so I want it right on the edge. This is easy to do with the old style volume knob that was simply coupled to a potentiometer. But NOOOO, I hear some clipping distortion and want to turn it down just a hair, and the fucker will jump down like about 6dB. Wrecks the whole damn song sometimes.

OK, not technical this time - white picket fences. You know you can just jump over the thing but you don't because for whatever reason the property holder does not want you walking on his grass or whatever. A white picket fence is not security, it is just a sign that says "Don't walk here". And you respect that.

The longest word in that last sentence is what I really miss, but I am not going to wreck the thread going into detail about that. It's all been said. But maybe some just don't understand the whole nature of the white picket fence. It's not secure, you want secure you need a higher fence with barbed wire at the top, you don't want that in your neighborhood. A white picket fence is a sign that around here people still respect one another. There is no need for laser targeted weapons, electrified fences, junkyard dogs.

One good friend of mine actually HAS a white picket fence. But only one. And he's the only one on his street, I don't even know his address, I just get to the street and look for the white picket fence.

Sorry if your intent was more along the lines of clothing or haidos or something like that. If so, I could mention silk shirts. I used to have one and it was awesome. I can extrapolate on that if you wish.

I just happen to know a place that can build you one! If you have $100,000.00 or so. Otherwise, check out the new Mustang. I also happen to know the main engineer that worked on the new 2010 engine......the bitch screams. I rode in it, when it was still in the 'working out the kinks' phase a couple years ago. It is impressive.

As for clothing and style, I really don't worry about it. If I want to wear something I do. Where I am, you see just about everything to some degree. No one really questions it.

Hand written letters, all I ever get are bills anymore.

LaTigresse -> RE: Modern life is rubbish--What do you wish was still in fashion? (4/12/2010 8:09:18 AM)

I don't think I've gotten a hand written letter in over 20 years.

DomMeinCT -> RE: Modern life is rubbish--What do you wish was still in fashion? (4/12/2010 8:17:05 AM)

Record players and albums with covers big enough to display interesting designs and art.

Perhaps it would be nice if we could re-discover the old attitudes to life, maybe if we were'nt all so enlightened.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Modern life is rubbish--What do you wish was still in fashion? (4/12/2010 8:40:08 AM)

I like to send hand written letters to pen pals, of course I type faster than I write , so sometimes they're typed hehe.

Several of my friends and I still send each other handwritten letters, just because a couple of years ago we realized we missed getting them.  I've never sent a telegraph or a telegram though, and I think that's a real loss.

I'd look dashing in an ascot.  I'd wear an ascot every chance I got.  While we're at it, I'd love to wander around in a straw hat, a crisp collarless shirt, seersucker jacket, and cuff links.
So...I don't believe I have to say this, but...if you'd look dashing in an ascot, man up and wear one.

You'd turn heads-make that be a *good* thing.

Fashion is a crutch for those with no style-when I wear vintage tea dresses, people stop me in the street to compliment me-there's no reason you couldn't have the same effect.

You're absolutely right about this and this advice, in a sense, justified the entire thread.  I'm going to make it a point to acquire/learn how to wear an ascot.

I wrote one today.  But I now think- wonder if I should mail it.  Well you know.   !

That's funny, I was just looking at the road test for the new 2011 Mustang on Youtube, "Kelly" or "Cars.com" I think.
It gets 419 horsepower out of the new 5.0 engine. Yes, it'll scream!
As for handwritten letters I do that all the time. And not just to congressmen and senators either.
Two weeks ago I wrote my neice a letter, she's up at Uni. Maine studying to be a physical therapist. Of course everytime I do that it costs me a $20 bill.

Wow. Sending your kin rocks.  A first class spanking stamp is 44 cents.  lol

monywildcat -> RE: Modern life is rubbish--What do you wish was still in fashion? (4/12/2010 11:29:36 AM)

I agree with the cute little shirt-waist, a-line dresses!  I would totally go about town in my Chevy Bel-Air looking like a stepford wife.  Complete with pearls, those great big sunglasses, (I saved a pair of my mom's from that era), cute little bags (also saved from mom's collection).

And I wish it were still "en vogue" for a couple to get married, have a couple of little ones, and be able to afford all that and a nice 3 bed/2 bath home with a white picket fence on one income.  Cigarettes were what, 50 cents a pack?  Gas was affordable.  Ah, I'll bet those were the days.

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: Modern life is rubbish--What do you wish was still in fashion? (4/12/2010 11:33:27 AM)

I can't believe no one has mentioned KILTS.  Sure, people still wear them occasionally, but let's go back to when they were daily attire.  Or tights, codpieces, and fancy ruffled shirts, a la Lord Byron.  Oh yeah!

I wish men were courtly and not crude and wore suits.

I share your affection for suits, which are nearly due for a comeback.  The trend toward well-cut suits seems to run in 20 year cycles.  Plus the vintage preppy look (hounds tooth patterns, tweed, argyle, even seersucker) is huge among early 20somethings right now.  Brooks Brothers, J. Press, and Vineyard Vines have all mainstreamed significantly in recent times.  In a couple of years when the young turks are  looking for jobs they'll be in sharp looking suits and that will become the new trend for all ages.

I was born in the wrong decade. Ask those who met me what I wear.

Oh, and public hangings!
Mark Twain (Samuel Clements) said he saw his first hanging before he was 12!
If my taxdollars are paying for executions I damn well want to see them!
Think about it, a public hanging in a big park, you could make a day of it, hot dogs, frisbees, games for the kids, a rock band singing "Hey Hey, goodbye", cotton candy, fireworks.
And you could watch a heinous criminal dancing in the wind!
