Polish President Lech Kaczynski 'in plane crash'

A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.

Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.

Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.

They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when the Soviets killed thousands of Poles.

The BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw says the crash is a catastrophe for the Polish people.

He says Prime Minister Donald Tusk was reportedly in tears when he was told.

I am saddened today to learn of the death of Lech Kaczynski, the Polish President.

I have had dealings with Mr Kaczynski (when he was the President of Warsaw) during the end of my career in Poland before he became President of Poland.

I could not agree with the politics of him or his party due to his very public stance and persecution of both the LGBT and BDSM communities in Poland and to the stigmatization of people simply because they are gay, lesbian, transgendered or are interested in BDSM. It was these politics which influenced my own downfall and caused me to regard Mr Kaczynski and his supporters as political enemies and I remain in strong defiance of such politics today.

That saying Lech Kaczynski was a man of great principle and personal integrity who worked hard to raise public awareness of the Warsaw Uprising and was instrumental in setting up the Warsaw Uprising Museum and monument for which he is to be admired. Many politicians would have just settled for something which caused people to remember the event, but Kaczynski worked towards something which gave people the opportunity to learn about, and learn from such an important European historic event.

I am saddened at his loss and for the bereavement this causes to his family, the people who knew him, his supporters and the people of Poland. Today these people are in my prayers.

I also pray that in choosing a new President, that Poles will find it within themselves to choose someone who is more tolerant towards people and inclusive towards members of the LGBT and BDSM communities, and that together in this tragedy Poles can take the opportunity to find the solidarity which they were once known for and which is of greater importance than the political differences which divide us.

I ask for you all to include this in your prayers.

Stella,

I am Polish and German.

Seldom crashes like this  are happenstance.   The rabbit hole runs deep.

I also am gay.

I absolutely HATE the word "homeland".

I do hope for the local people- to find comfort and peace in this time of need.    :-(

Wow,what a traggedy for Poland irregardless of his politics.May they all rest in peace

Stella,is there any hint at all of a stink to this accident?Airplane crashes seem a handy way to rid someone of a thorn in their side...I don't like subscribing to conspiracy theories....but there are,at times, conspiracies.
