About 6 years ago I set out to get a new mattress. I did not want anything really high off the floor but didn't want to sleep on the floor. My vision was a high quality mattress on a platform bed. I built a platform for it (because I couldn't see paying the money they wanted for basically a wooden box), with storage underneath. And yes, king sized is the only way I will have it also.
It is not a traditional mattress.......very thick and very rigid........and you do not flip it. the base has a thin spring system, then there are several thick, high tech layers of memory foam, and then, my saving grace for the heat issue, a pillow top. This seriously is a different mattress. People that like a really firm sleeping surface like me, think it is too soft at first and people like like a really soft squishy sleeping surface think it is too hard, at first. I had to lay on it and relax to really appreciate it. I am a bed snob, everything has to be 'just right'. Mattress, pillows, sheets, even the quilt on top. But I can tell you that, even after 6 years, I love that bed. It does take the sheets for extra deep mattresses but they are very easy to find now. If you go this route, I can give you a few chains that have some good high thread count sets that are of good quality and not hundreds of dollars.
If you go with a Tempurpedic and get hot, get a high quality feather bed to top it off and then cover both with a mattress pad and the sheets for a deep mattress. It is basically the same idea as my mattress, just in different components rather than all in one. The feather bed will help disperse the body heat, like my pillow top does, for a more comfortable and cool night of sleep.
What a great Idea!! I am currently having hot flashes in addition to my general furnace-like sleep temperature.
I also need truly good sheets and pillows. Well worth the investment!
