Regular as clockwork at 9 am GMT I can guarentee I will get at least one message from some kind of scammer claiming to be from some western country but they went travelling in Africa and got stuck.  (sound familiar anyone?)

Now hopefully all of us here know how to spot the scammers a mile off and avoid them like last Christmas's brussel sprouts, but I'm not writing an internet safety thread.

I want to know if there is anyone else out there who on occasion doe to either boredom or whatever reason decided to play along with the game.

I do this on occasion.  it can actually be quite fun.

For example, one of my best ones was some guy from Nigeria randomly messaged me a few years ago back when I was on AdultFriendFinder with a proposition. that was a friend of his needed some cash.  this friend was located in my country but he didn't have a bank account (any of this ringing any bells? lol) and if I was sent some money orders, would i be willing to cash them and then forward the cash on to this friend via western union.  Well the red flag had already gone up and was proudly waving away well before this point but I though "What the hell, I'm bored today" so I went along for the ride. So I agreed to let him send the orders to my PO box (not daft enough to give my REAL address) which he did. a few days later the orders arrived.  I took them to the bank and asked them to check them out as i believed they were bogus and it turned out i was right. So this was all reported to the police etc etc etc but this random messager didn't know anything about my little chat with the law so my plan was still going.

I get home and log into the internet, turn on messenger and within 20 minutes the IM i was expecting came through. "Did you get the orders?" to which i told him yes i had. "Have you cashed them?" i replied no, "Why not? that was our agreement!" came the reply. so at that point i had told him that I was arrested at my bank and the orders were confiscated.

Well you should have seen the brown stuff fly!  Ranting and ravoing at me over IM while I'm sitting in the comfort of my own home laughing my ass off.  At one point he even wanted me to break into the police station and steal back the money orders and then was going through some spur of the moment plan on just how i was to do this and how if I didn't I would owe him all of the money.

I told him that as they hadn't been cashed he could trace them and send reclaim the money.

The Im's came for about 5 days after, so after that I decided to say that the police had given me the orders back as they had investigated them and they were genuine and I had put them into my bank and that I was keeping the money as compensation for the humiliation of being arrested.. Once again the tyrade began.. "I am honest man and you rob me! how dare you do such thing to me! blah blah blah."  The last message i sent was to say that "Well you been scammed dude. a guys gotta make a living. I'm blocking you now. and thanks for the free cash".

Anyone else like to have fun with them?  if so please share your tale.

I don't have time to play with the fake people, myself...

Not that I am bored, but I'm chomping at the bit for such a chance. I think it would have been nicer if you actually had scammed a scamer. However, if the money orders had actually been good then it wasn't a scan, so then what do you do ?

There is also the possibility that someone could get stranded in a foreign country, and now it's wrecked for those who might be for real. The few may have wrecked it for others.

Like hitchiking, everybody used to do it, but there were robberies and so forth so it is not only illegal, most people are afraid to pick up a hitchiker. Now if someone REALLY needs a ride they are pretty much stuck. Luckily most people have cellphones now, but I was around since before those damn things existed. But I have one because if I get stranded I will have to call someone. People won't even give you a lift to a gas station these days. A perfect ploy for a robber would be to have a gas can in his hand.

Term,  may I ask, what is a cell phone going to do?

(rhetorical question)
