Until the forum guidelines are revised, please remember that quoting other posters should be done only as necessary to make your point.  A general rule of thumb is the quoted material should not be longer than your response.  And for the most part, you can make your point without quoting a post with a pic in it, or you can trim out the pic.

Thanks!

I have a question about the pics. I have some old books and sometimes would like to scan them and post them. I guess they wouldn't be quotable, and OCR is not all that trustable. These are full pages from a regular full size books, like an encyclopedia or something like that. Other things I would like to scan in might have hand drawn calculus formulae or something like that. As such it would be easier just to get it to size full screen.

Now at the moment these files are about 600KB, and they are about 1200X1900. I scanned them in high resolution because I wanted to touch them up, just to increase the contrast ratio because the paper is getting old. However with that done I can probably cut the file size down to a third of what they are now. So let's say I get them down to 200KB. In comparison to an animated GIF, first of all the compression is better and these do not have multiple frames.

If I take them down to 800X600 and use maximum compression who knows how low I might get it, and still be ledgible.

Also I assume that normal HTML tags won't work for this, and due to the fact that it is best ledgible actually fullscreen, how would I go about posting something like that ? What's more I think it is seven pages, which all should be combined for continuity.

Actually I could also just forget about the images and enhance the contrast to the point where they go all black or something, which helps the compression process. The images on the pages are not important to the point, but avoiding the use of OCR my best choices are to make the images all white or all black and give maximum contrast to the text.

Anyway, is there a rough figure on just how big of a file is OK ? Because of course it has something to do with bandwidth and webspace. Is there perhaps some rough estimate we can go by ?

I already tried to post this article, but I used my own webspace and it was just a bunch of links. It would fare better right there in front of the reader. What are my best options ? I have quite a bit of printed material and books. I don't want to make a habit out of using pictures for text but sometimes that seems the best way.

Please advise.

You say you want to string together 7 full pages of images and then you say the images are not important... I find that confusing.  Perhaps it would be best to privately seek the counsel of the one that you write to on occasion.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse. The problem is that's the only form I have. In this case it's not that images are important, except that they are actually the content. The pictures on the page are like those in a newspaper article, they can be blotted out and in a JPG will save some disk space/bandwidth whatever. However the text part is also an image.

Contacting the one I write to on occasion ? I can do that, but even so it would be nice if someone could say "limit filesize to XXX KB". Anyone can see the properties of a file they want to embed in a post, and then if need be crop it, recompress it or whatever it takes to get it within specifications.

I don't know the intent of the friendly reminder, it seems to me that to a website the KBs are what matters. As far as what I wanted to post, I might just have to forget it. Even if I can get the files down to 200KB there are still seven of them which adds up to 1.4MB.

Maybe there are other issues on CM relating to content and relevance, I wouldn't know. But with that kind of filesize it might be better if I can just find some really advanced OCR software. It would solve all this for this instance, but in the past I've found OCR to be not so reliable.

I'm sorry but I don't know who to ask and how to have this resolved. A person who I met in cm and trusted has abused this trust and is using an id made by myself and has changed the password and email so I can't close the account. The person is now posting my real photos and real information against my wishes as he is angry I wish to cease chatting with Him. How can this be resolved and the account closed?

Maybe a simple solution, and one that does not negatively affect collarchat bandwidth, would be to post them on a free photo sharing site like photobucket and provide a link?

You would contact support over on the other side.

http://www.collarme.com/personals/support.htm

They do tell you NOT to give your password to anyone for that very reason.

If he is posting personal information on the profile, I would also hit the report profile button when you bring the profile into view.
