A racist murder, the murder of a racist, or both?

The leader of the Afrikaaner AWB which resisted the end of apartheid has been found murdered on his farm in the north of South Africa. The official line is that it was in a dispute with farm workers over wages, but AWB supporters connect it to a rise in the use of racist language by the ANC, including the broadcast of the "Kill A Boer" song.

Terreblanche was 69. There is no doubt whatever he was a racist bully (his conviction list tells that tale) and a hero to white supremacists not only in South African but worldwide despite the failure of his efforts to hold back majority rule in South Africa.

Two black farm workers are under arrest on suspicion of murder.

Apparently not a very good guy, but is someone like Mugabe, or Winnie Mandela, who murder or call for the murder, of other blacks, any less bad?

I think, and I would hope, that no one here is going to mourn the guy - he was a nazi, nothing less; a brute for whom, it must be said, the age of 69 is something of an achievement in that its a wonder he didnt get murdered some years ago.

Of course.

But as I posed, is he (was he) any more of a Nazi than Robert Mugabe or Winnie Mandela? Or for that matter, Idi Amin or Fidel Castro.

(Just for the record, I will mourn none of the above, nor elevate any one above any other in terms of evil or virtue).

Well, in a way that was the debate hoped for (or part of it). We can all see this guy was an asshole, but not an asshole to very much more or less degree than some of those you mention, particularly the nazi Mugabe. Being an asshole, or a nazi, is not contingent on ethnicity.

By all accounts this was a murder over money, not a racist murder. There is no doubt Terreblanche was racist though.

While the guy that was murdered was a pretty bad dude, and the world is a better place without him, the underlying issue of white farmer murders in SA and Rhodesia Zimbabwe is buried by this article. 
 
There is a little reference to the ANCs continued stroking of racial hatred by continuing the practice of using the “kill the boar” song as their unofficial anthem, but it is marginalized like the farmer killings.  Both sides in this case are bad guys, but to justify his murder is not journalism but propaganda.

I dont see the BBC article as justifying anything. They make it quite clear, early in the pice, that he was murdered in a financial dispute.

The financial dispute excuse is used for almost every white farmer murder.  After they mention that in the first sentence, they right away go on into his racist history, as a way to justify that his killing is different from the spade of other white farmer murders and in this way separate the two issues.

I'll give you the fact that it is semantics, but it makes a big difference when you look at it from the big picture angle.  Especially, with the SA land affairs department proposing to either nationalize farm land or to institute a quit-rent land tenure system.

Terreblanche was an intellectual dwarf. Any grumpy old man who witholds his workers wages is at risk of being done over anywhere. The fuss is just allowing him an importance in his pointless death that he was never allowed in his pointless life.
Farmers get killed in Africa every day, since they are the focal point of grievance and probably the only people in the neighbourhood with any money.
The AWB all working together would have difficulty in passing the 11 plus.
These proud guardians of white dutch culture were cut to ribbons the last time they started flexing their beer marinaded muscles.
Well, if they do kick off it will give the locals a reason to put them out of thier misery.

I don't see why: most of America has no problem with referring to a right leaning centrist as a Marxist, after all.

Not really. If people can't be bothered to use terms correctly in general, them complaining about one specific term being used incorrectly is pretty pointless.
