MistressRoux -> The Nomadic Domina Asks: What City/Country Next? (3/30/2010 6:47:19 AM)

Here's the dilemma: I've lived in Korea for a year. It's time for me to move on. I'm well-educated (Bachelor's and Master's from well-regarded schools) but I have limited work experience. I'm interested in foreign service and I'm studying for the FSOT, but even if that pans out, it's a lengthy process.

On top of the basic considered, I'd like a place with a noteworthy and welcoming BDSM scene.

It's a long wish list, I know, but I hope someone can offer me some insight.

P.S.: I'm an American citizen and though I'm fully bilingual, my second language will not serve me at all. I am fluent in survival/vacation French and I'm working on learning more. I'm looking into German as Germany and Switzerland appeal to me, though the chances of getting a visa sponsor seem slim at best.

That would be exciting. I visited years back.

The job market though... not that it's better elsewhere.

Well, if you're looking for a perv, approx. 51 years old, somewhat elegant, distinguished (graying on the edges)....I may be your guy (however, my fiance' may have a problem with you).

You could come visit me. I'm just outside Seoul.

And Lookie... FIANCE? When did that happen? Congrats!!! That is one lucky lady!

*I'm sure he was being silly with you. He's a flirt. Don't mind him.

By the way, I'm serious about meeting. There is a Women's Film Festival in Seoul this weekend. Wanna go with me to a show? (not a date... just nice to talk to interesting folks).

Not this weekend as I've got plans all through, but perhaps the next. Where are you exactly? Your profile isn't visible.

I haven't been to Europe in almost a year because of work obligations.  I know that the economic climate has changed pretty dramatically in that time.

Paris, Prague, and Berlin have always been my favorite cities.  Rotterdam too (Amsterdam was fun when I was 20 but turned into Vegas with tulips as I got older) but I'd never be anything but a tourist there.  I don't give half a damn about "BDSM Scenes" but I never had much trouble finding partners in Paris, Prague, or Berlin.  Berlin actually still has a viable musical underground in which I found several entertaining play partners.  I'm also daft for museums and symphonies, so extended stays in any of these places are always appealing.

Reykjavik was a blast, though for obvious reasons an extended stay there (one that involves finding employment) seems hilariously unlikely.

Is Russia out of the question?  The American expats I've known who have done the best (both socially and economically) have mostly gravitated toward Moscow.  Of course most of them landed there shortly after school (a decade ago now) and had very rocky starts.  Ultimately, though, they've had outrageously good times and made a ton of money.  Moscow has whatever scene you can think of, but the cost of living at this point is somewhere in outer space (the rents make Central Park West look like Kansas).

I'm sure you already know it depends more on who you know and what kind of arrangements you have lined up before you settle down than it does where you happen to land.  I've known people of similar abilities, with comparable backgrounds and credentials, who have both been in roughly the same place at roughly the same time and told tales, years later, that made it sound like they were on different planets.  So just make sure you do your homework and show up prepared, because there's nothing more lonesome than being another unwelcome, miserable American 20something of the (Please Get) Lost Generation.
