I have friends to whom this happened as well.  They moved into a home that had been empty for a while, occasionally found a package on their front porch that wasn't theirs, returned it, and so on.

Until one day they came home to find a squad of police and FBI agents at the house, which they learned was being used by a ring of computer thieves as a drop address for illegal interstate purchases funded with stolen credit cards.

Go talk to your postmaster and explain that you don't want any more packages delivered to your address that don't use your names.  Might help.

Just tell all parties concerned the package will find it's way back to the person/place that sent it. They can get it back from them. If they continue to be obnoxious call the police. Although there are many things that really smell about this what matters is you protect yourselves because sometthing is wrong here. If they feel you have their property they may try to get it out of your apartment and that will be a bad situation.

FR, next time just keep the thing and let whoever's insurance pay for it. Screw it, there was a dat when it was nice, whe things were diffenrent, when it paid to be honest but those days are over. You get something you didn't pay for call noone. If you are honest make an attempt top find the rightful owner and don't make a federal case out of it. After a reasonable time, open the thing and sell it or whatever. Really. You tried to be honest and everything goes against you, so what is the alternative ?

I used to have such high ideals, but found later that not onlt couldn't I live up to them, but in fact that I didn't want to. I WILL take advantage of other people's stupidity now, and not lose a minute's sleep over it.

CYA is not a bad thing.

If the parcel was the result of an ebay transaction, inform ebay administration, just in case it is a scam. If it turns out not to be a scam, and is a genuine mix up, ebay will it is hoped contact the parties involved to sort the delivery addresses out for future transactions at least.

Also, when you handed the parcel back, you should have obtained a receipt from the office, I always demand one, because I don't trust the posties, especially now as I have still not received my package despite assurances, ( mentioned in another thread).

Why not, I have contacted them before when I have had reason to do so, and there has been no problems there. If there is a possibility of fraud or other criminal activities taking place, then it is the duty of all of us to keep people informed in an attempt this sort of behaviour, if it is fraudulent is stopped or at least kept to an absolute minimum in order to guard the innocent, that being the rest of us.

Anyone can find ebay administration email address, even if they are not registered with the site, just drop them a mail, as that even if they don't reply , a mail sent can guard one's ass in the case things go screwy.

I am sorry Anerin.

I am cynical.  I did not mean to take that out on you.

Termyn8or -> RE: Package delivered to wrong address (3/29/2010 12:05:12 PM)

I was also cynical, really in such a case I would make an attempt to find the rightful owner. But within reason, somehow the address got FUBARed or something and that's where I would look. A similar address or something like that.

In my case I get mail from time to time that was intended for the people on the next street but with the same house number. I just run it down there. Sometimes they are not home so I just drop it in their mailbox (which may technicallt be illegal, as if I cared). In the case of a package I would wait until I could hand it to them personally. But I am not going to BFE to find anyone. But in this case I know where it's supposed to go, if I didn't I would make a reasonable attempt, but in this case I'm not sure the OP even has a clue who it actually belongs to.

Morality is a funny thing for some people (hint). If I found a wallet I would make ever effort to return it, but if I found a paper bag with like fifty grand in it, nobody would ever know. In the latter case, someone ditched it for a reason, and business is business.

I live in Florida too ya' know. I haven't been feeling well lately. I think they are all terrorists and you are caught up in a plot to smuggle more anthrax into Florida. Did everyone at the post office get ill the next day?
