I want to go back to New York City to visit again sometime. If there is an afterlife and I am sent to Hell as I am anticipating I expect it to closely resemble France, so I can wait for that.

I loved the brief time I spent in Paris.  Notre Dame (where I used almost a full memory card taking pics of gargoyles), getting thoroughly lost on the Metro, walking MILES (with frequent stops at wine bars), trying to find HRC (but getting directed to Planet Hollywood instead.. HRC was on the other side of town).  It was a great day, and my legs and feet were only slightly less sore than the day spent exploring Luxembourg.....

Yes, paris has very nice scenery etc in the main ... stray off the "beaten track" and you'll find things really rather different (specially if you're taken for being English)

I can muddle through in French at a push, which if you make the effort always helps in any country.

I'm glad you got there though, my list of places to get to on the mainland of Europe has other places in priority, and I've been to Paris a few times.

One of my favorite cities. I've been twice. Once for a long weekend and once for a week and even then it didn't seem to be nearly enough time to do everything. Unfortunately I was too young to appreciate all the great food as I would now and hope to go back again someday.

I learned quickly to speak German rather than the lousy little bit of French I knew then. One of my favorite days spent there I was so utterly lost but found the greatest little shops and places while doing so.

A French accent still makes me weak in the knees even today. Sigh

Which reminds me. We were on the bus leaving the terminal for the plane - it was crowded as usual. I asked my colleague - she's a young Polish lady in her 20s, very pretty, very bright - what French she knew. "Je t'adore" she answered. "Well" said I "seeing as we're going to a transport exhibition and it'll mainly be men on the stands, that should be a good enough opening line". The bus erupted in laughter.

I declined to convince her that "vas te foutre" was French for "pleased to meet you". Though the thought of it did cross my mind several times and had me in hysterics.

You're right, that's what I should have said to DonignorAmus: "Vas te faire foutre, connard ".

Last time I went to Paris I got stuck on that big roundabout and spent about 10 minutes driving round in circles trying to get off it. That's pretty much all I can remember apart from asking for some milk and getting charged 4 quid for a glass of milk with ice cubes. My French amounts to "je voudrais le poisson" so as you'd imagine I came back from the whole experience pretty much philosophically baffled. And they don't speak English - their loss.

Funny ... you're not the first I've heard had the same problem.

I make it a point not to drive in other countries. Saves lives all around.

As long as you stay in the north of Europe V, youre fine driving - its gets a bit hairier in the east due to the roads more than the drivers (though they have their moments). Its once you start going south into the Romance language countries you take your life in your hands.

Good grief... they turned their tricks right in the city parks on blankets?

I've driven in plenty of countries and never really had a problem.

Greece is not for the faint hearted - they don't give each other a great deal of space at 90 miles an hour. Belguim's a strange place - it was raining to the point you couldn't see much this particular day - every a few miles there was an accident and some people were getting cut out of cars - Belgians were stood on bridges with video cameras filming death - one of the strangest things I've seen - surely death isn't entertaining?
