they use them in physical therapy too.

Aye, it was where I learned about them, whilst learning pilates to strenghten the core muscles post slipped disc. They support the arch of the lumbar region very well, so that exercises can be done with concentration, not concentration marred by pain.

And if you don't have them, at least you can buy them....exercise ones that is.

I have a horrible back and almost zero flexibility.  A personal trainer introduced me to these exercise balls and I loved them so much I went and bought a couple of them to have at home.  I use the largest to lay backwards and just hang/stretch (like doing a backbend). 

I also like to use one in place of a desk chair.  When I get bored, I bounce or do hip circles...helps to loosen things up.
