I enjoy shibari and other forms of intricate rope bondage, and have taken classes and engaged in it quite a bit both as the one tying the other or the one being tied, either pretty much alone, or combined with S/M and such. I've also done a bit of self-bondage using it to make a harness I can still move in. I did have one somewhat bad experience in which my hands were bound in an uncomfortable position, then the rest of the bondage with the same rope was applied, during a class. My hands started falling asleep, and it got rather painful, but not quite to the point where I needed to be cut out of it. Since then, I've requested that my hands be bound in a more comfortable position, or saved for last. I've had some other circulation issues occasionally, including fainting once during needle play, so it *is* a physical limitation for me.

I think that intricate rope bondage is beautiful, especially with contrasting colors of rope and interesting, complicated knots. I adore partial and full suspension, both of which have involved this gorgeous kind of knotwork woven into it - it induces a literally floaty feeling. [:D]

Rope is actually the "kink dejure" at moment, over on fet every dipshit with a wad of rope and a paddle has pics of some woman tied up in overly complicated ropework and pictures of bruised asses.

Probably why I don't do much ropework anymore, used to love the stuff.

I am curious if anyone is REALLY into this. I find that only a few people actually know a lot of the knots and positions and can hardly find anyone who practices this. I am wondering why.

It's very popular in San Francisco.  Midori has a book out, and you can take classes. I've seen enough of it to be bored by it. It's like macrame.  It isn't even really sexual. But there are people who like it.

We use rope on a very regular basis. I love how it looks and feels against my skin.
He does too. He's great with knots and can look at a pic or a video or watch a demo and instantly know how to reproduce the look or the knot.
There is nothing hotter than an arm gauntlet or when he crosses my ankles and then wraps rope up my calves, incorporating my heels into the design.
I have shopped, gone to the movies and out to dinner with rope corsets on under my clothes (thanks Katy for that idea in our heads).
I have slept with a rope corset and arm gauntlets on. You feel it at every breath. And then when the ropes come off, you have that wonderful pattern that stays on your skin for hours after...
It's visual. It's tactile. It travels easily in a bag. I can find nothing negative about rope.

YES I've seen him giving a demonstration or two. He's very popular among kinksters, and does his workshops at The Citadel, a really good kink clubhouse in SinFrancisco. I took a few classes, AND he even does speed workshops so the setup isn't so long and "let's see, where does this one go" type of buzz kills, but I just didn't have the free time to devote to become as proficient as that would require. Sadly.

You can get a pretty good effect of rope-against-the-skin sensation without the overwhelming aesthetic of over-the-top shibari, and THAT I do enjoy doing. I DID get my merit badge in Pioneering, the one with the most rigorous knot-tying requirements.

I used to tell my wife she could have gotten one in Semenship.

That's 'cos most people miss the point and end up wrapping parcels not tying people

Pretty strange line of reasoning. You love your own rope work less because now it's fashionable? I like because I like rope, how many other people are doing rope (and the quality of their stuff) doesn't really change that.

He's more into damsel in distress and says it gives him the opportunity to be an artist, with a living canvas. Plus of course, it turns him on.

Beyond that, rope is almost always something that puts me into a good headspace and turns me on. And since he gets off on my responses, this always gives him a really good response to feed off of. But like Anda, my hands are done last since my left wrist will go numb from things just resting on it wrong, not even tied.

I know quite a few riggers, especially in the sf bay area that are very into shibari.

In contrast, I don't know any in the sf bay area (at least in the south bay) and, personally, I find the whole intricate knots thing a bit like the Japanese animations ... too much of this and that and not enough of what counts which is her undeniable helplessness in restraint and total availability for your use.

Still, I don't doubt sub jackie has seen em around ... just not my cup of sake.

GinoVega -> RE: Japanese Rope Style Bondage (4/18/2010 9:17:36 PM)

Shibari, to me, is one of the true arts of bondage. Much like painting has many different style, Shibari is a very beautiful style of sexual artistry. I don't get as many opportunities to put my practice to the test as I'd like, but it is an art form I absolutely adore. There are many types of ropes and such to use with it, but I love using silk the most.

When I watch you, especially with electric-fairy, who is a beautiful compliment to the ropes, I have to say that I'm mesmerized. The combination of music, actions, reactions and rope become an unfolding piece of art work that pulls you in.
People watch you and feel inspired and want to be able to work like you do but nobody that copies can create that original master piece.
Saying that, I have recently seen some very nice rope work but what gets me is the voyeurs that stand around whispering criticisms. Last month I enjoyed a Chinese woman doing (in my opinion) a great performance with ropes but all I could hear from the audience I was standing amongst was unimpressed whining. They were so caught up in her technique and how they would of done it better that they couldn't see the picture she was creating.
