Hi this is a question for all you civil war buffs out there (or anyone who happens to be in the buff perhaps). I live in the UK and happened to pick u a copy of National Geographic april 2005. Theres a very good map of the civil war in it.
Anyway they have all the battles marked up and theres one in Maryland east of a town called Salisbury. This seems to be miles away from the usual theatre of war. Can anyone tell me anything about the battle?

Greetings :)

There were 7 battles that were fought in Maryland during the Civil War. Here is a very good link with information on each of them
http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/battles/bystate.htm

Here, also is another link showing the battles themselves as shown on maps
http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/battles/MDmap.htm

I hope this helps.

Master is a former Civil War reenactor, and actually participated in the reenactment of the battle of Antietam a few years ago.  I'll ask Him what He knows about Salisbury.

I have no idea about Maine, but Salsibury North Carolina was a notorious Confederate prison and housed a Confederate arsenal. After the Union soldiers routed the rebels, they looted the town, destroyed the munitions, and set out to destroy the railroad bridge over the Yadkin river. This bridge, about 6 miles east of Salisbury, was a vital supply route to the Confederate forces. Despite the use of artillery, the Union army was not able to defeat the Confederate forces guarding the bridge due to the Confederate's superior position and fortifications. The battle of Yadkin River was the last Confederate victory in N.C.

Is it possible that you had your states confused?

Hi all,

Hate to be pedantic. . . but the American Civil War was not a civil war. . . it was a war over southern secession. . .  the south did not want to take over the government, they wanted to leave the Union.  Minor point.

The infamous Confederate prison was Andersonville.

When did the battle happen?  Could it be related to the march on D.C.?

Best,

LaMalinche

theres no date on the map and no its miles away from washington. as i said it  miles away from the eastern theatre of war. to get there the rebs would have had to  march around washington and them south to the bit of maryland between chesapeake bay and the atlantic. or land by sea.
so nothing to do with earlys 1864 attempt to discract grant from richmond.

Hello Pavane ...

If the battle was east of Salisbury, it would have been in Delaware, because at the time of the ACW, Salisbury was right on the border of Maryland and Delaware.

Now, there are no battles listed for Salisbury, or anywhere in Delaware, but in the very early days of the war, there was a large pro-southern militia assembled in Delaware, led by members of the powerful DuPont family.

That's about all I can come up with.

the inhabitants of the islands east/southeast of Salisbury (Chincoteague and Assateague, off the coast of Maryland and the Virginia Peninsula)took a vote, seeing as how they straddled the MD line, and decided they did NOT support secession, but seeing as they were not important strongholds to any military operations, not many took notice...
this slave's relatives have lived there since before the revolutionary war...and still live there now; to this slave's knowledge, no battles were fought anywhere near them.

hello caitlyn and also mercnbeth
thanks for the replies and suggestions. caitlyn mentions something i thought might be a answer to the mystery. that is were pro southern  forces (militia) raised in that part of maryland early in the war. say in 61. then dispersed by northern forces.
