I was never one to become to attached to pets, I had a dog growing up. He was put to sleep when I was about 6. Then it was years before I had another pet. Close to 20, then my cat was killed at a very old age by an asshole in town.

But when I moved into my new house 6 years ago, I got a cat, a simple gray and white cat, we named her Olive. Yesterday I had to put her down at the young age of 6. She had cancer and it spread throughout her body. There was really nothing that could save her.
So I did what I had to do and the vet put her down while she was still gassed from some tests being done to see how far the cancer spread.
Now today, as I look around my house, I never thought a simple pet could become such a part of our family. But that is what she was, though if you where to ask me that last year I would have said, NO she's just the cat. But now I realize what a huge role she had in our lives.
I will miss you Olive, I am happy you are no longer suffering and that I took you home to be buried in your favorite place in the backyard, the place where you would run to as soon as we let you out.
I thought of burying her just beyond our backyard, as a final reward. See she was trained to not leave our yard, and she really never did. Though she would lay down at the end of the driveway, next to the sidewalk and when she stretched she would have 1 front paw out of the yard on the sidewalk. while she looked up at me like she had won a secret battle
Thank you Olive, I will miss you, you crazy bike, car, and leaf chasing cat.

Yes They can be so troublesome at that age, I remember when My daughter was 10.

Still, putting her down seems a bit of an over reaction.....no?

It's not when they're 10 that you want to put them down, it's when Satan takes posession of them on their 13th birthday. There's a reason why that number has been associated with bad luck across millenia.

Other than that, sorry for your loss, dear.

Sorry to hear about your loss and hope your Olive is going to meet my Oliver over the bridge...

my 4 are currently still younger than 6 and those days are truly the hardest...in 2004 I lost my dog-cat (accused him of being a dog-cat as he enjoyed to fetch paper out of the bin and up from any level as long as it isnt the floor) when he was 3 on cat HIV or Leukemia (lost track of what it was as with most of my cats it was one of those, apart from one who was found poisened and 3 who were run over by a car and 2 who disappeared).

However, on top of losing him, where I felt glad to still have the girl, the girl then died 4 days later as well, where it seemed she died on broken heart...I sadly wasn't around much at that time, they were with my parents as I had started a new job in another part of the country at that time but my parents said she lied for many hours in the bathroom and then the day later she died at the neighbour house (she decided to have two homes and lived with us and the neighbours...she always demanded a huge territoritrdy. However, these neighbours found her dead at the end where she was lieing in their bathroom as well....

Thanks everybody

Phpwer, well they should get along well, because my cat thought she was a dog.  When she was a kitten the only window she could reached looked out into our neighbors yard and she would watch him as he chased after cars and bikes from behind his fence.

Then when she was old enough we took her outside and the first thing she did was take off meowing after the first car that passed our house.  Whenever she was outside, from inside our yard she would chase after cars and kids on bikes the length of our property

So sad to hear.  Those little critters do find their ways into our hearts.

My deepest condolences.  I also had to put my furry friend down because of cancer when he was only seven.  That was two years ago and the place still seems empty without him.
