Disappearing Car Door

This is one of the coolest new ideas for automobiles that I've seen in a while. If this can be made cost effective as a standard feature I think is great!

I was hoping they'd show it in the rain. My first thought was how in a downpour I only crack my door open enough to slide in, with that (video) type of door it seems that the interior would become soaking wet in moments. But yes it is cool.

It would absolutely suck in a downpour. Good call.

I don't like the single window aspect of it. Cleans window lines look nice until the rear passenger wants to open the window when the front passenger does not.

Still a pretty neat idea.

That was cool, I didn't think about the rain aspect, though. She's got a good point. Maybe there's an invisible shield that deflects rain that goes up when the door goes down.

I am wondering how safe that door is compared to the standard door when in an accident.  Say, if you got T-boned.

There have been times when I've had to park in less than desirable areas, when getting back into my vehicle I feel vulnerable with the door open so I try and shut/lock it quickly. With the slide-under door there seems to be quite a length of time between getting in the vehicle and being secured in it.

I think its really cool...except I have had power this and power that go on the fritz many times, so I am leary of an electric door...how do you get in or out if there's an electrical failure in the car?

I hope none of our customers see that! We have already had a Jag XK8 in with lambo doors which in the end proved to be a huge mistake.

Actually can anyone tell me what car they are using. It is not a model we have in the UK.

Thanks

Thanks. Sadly I made the mistake of showing this to my partner when he came home from lunch. He has now rushed off to the workshop to take a look at the Jag to see if it can be done to that!!!!

I am not one for novelty doors - tho I always liked the old Merc SL gullwings (for appearance, in reality they stick and the sills just rust away - like my first 308GTS tried to, the rascal)

I am amused by this wonderfully presented half baked idea.

its a clever solution to a nonexistent problem !

my Renault Alpine GTA had electric door locks - they thoughtfully provided a manual override for when (not IF) they broke. Mine took 4 months to die - a reliability record, apparently!

no doubt it would happen in the above mentioned downpour

oh man.   You are a conspiracy theorist. just because a car has power windows- doesn't mean they get broke.  Even tho mine is broke- and with this type of set up- in my case I can still get in my car- but under this set up- I would not be.

1/2 the people on the board here- must have a light on the dash board that is on- yet means nothing.  One pot hole and that car would be toast.

There is already a door being used on many vehicles albeit people carriers and commercial vehicles that can do much the same thing, open the entire cabin, and it does not have to be powered, the humble sliding door. I had one on my old  70's VW combi, and it was invaluable, it opened up the whole of the functionable camper interior when camping, and when not, the close parking  and loading capabilities were superb. The other thing of course, was the door when closed was supported on all four sides, and had individual opening windows. Downpours were always a problem, but hey, my van had rain gutters on the roof, but the thought was at the time to create a small extendable awning so the door could be open when it was raining.

Point well taken, though I think with a little creative engineering that could be (to some degree) alleviated.

How safe is any car when you get T-Boned?? Though if you watch the video again, that was the whole point to the design of this door. To add strength back into the side framing of the car as the current standard design does not.

As with anything, the more complex it becomes, the more prone it is to failure. Again some creative engineering would be required to provide simple egress in the event of mechanical or power failure.

I beg to differ with you on that. Have you never driven down a street only to have some thoughtless moron fling their door open to exit the vehicle, without looking to see if anyone was coming?

As a teenager I was riding with a friend, and that very incident happened. He stopped immediately. Then we turned around to see a very shocked little old lady holding the latch handle to her car door, which was now firmly affixed to the grill of my friend's car.

This is my concern. While it looks cool and is marvel of engineering - if the car battery dies or the electrical system has an issue - how do you get out?
