quote:
ORIGINAL: DarlingSavage I don't know that I agree with this. If you're talking about rape, real rape, I've been taught that it's an act of violence and IMO, has nothing to do with sex, or porn, for that matter. That has been dubiously discussed before and, despite the heavily feministic reduction of all rape to a strawman of aggression, clearly rape is a sexual assault. The motivation for it is, frankly, irrelevant. It would be better described as an "act of opportunity" than anything else, if we want to get specific. quote:
ORIGINAL: DarlingSavage If a male is that sick that he wants to rape someone, I don't think watching some porn is going to stop him. However, there are some that would say that porn encourages rape. The only real question here is whether porn fuels the motivation for it in people for whom the motivation already exists. quote:
ORIGINAL: DarlingSavage Yes, I read that article over there, too. However, the 20/20 report I was referring to spoke more specifically of the harm that could befall women in the industry, such as drug addiction resulting and poor self-esteem issues. Those are "harms" than befall a women just for being alive. quote:
ORIGINAL: DarlingSavage I think you've hit the nail on the head. I think, ultimately, the problem with porn isn't the actual fact of it, in and of itself, but more of a problem with society's negative view towards sex, more specifically, towards women who are sexually liberated, sexually expressive, and comfortable with their own sexuality. I believe this attitude stemmed from the proliferation of christianity across the world and the onslaught of patriarchy. Even to this day, some anthropologists will discuss the "promiscuity" of matriarchal societies, particularly when discussing the spread of AIDS in Africa, which is another topic altogether. A topic which is interesting, because it would suggest that the negative finger-wagging at female porn stars for daring to be sexually prolific (and *gasp* maybe even enjoy it!) is happening because it is presumed that a sexually liberal woman must have something 'wrong' with her or must be getting exploited to have that mindset.
