What do you think of it? Do you think those people are just making money hand over fist and it's all good? Or do you think it's an exploitation of women and men inside and outside the industry?

I've been on both sides of the fence with this. Especially after seeing an article on 20/20 on the evils of porn. But then I heard about Samois. Anyway, I was wondering what the general consensus on this was.

Thanks for your replies, I'm looking forward to reading them.

I've been on the inside of the fence in numerous ways.

By and large, the only "exploitation" taking place is that put upon the wallets of the credit-card holders. And that too is completely consensual.

I don't mind porn..I think it is good to have.
Personally I think without porn there would be more shit..when some males wouldn't be able to relieve their stress....they would do weird things to females.

Ofcourse in businesses were lots of money is involved..shitty things happen.

No brainer. NOT.

but there may be a deeper exploitation going on: exploitation of those in poverty and desperation. But that kind of exploitation goes on through out the economy and in all industries. No reason to single out the sex industry.

Ditto..

How many people wish that Verizon and AT&T would stop financially exploiting people for text messages?

What people on the anti side have to say is that the harm porn does is give vanilla guys the impression that sex consists of fucking a girl doggie style and and then having her suck you off until you come on her face. Having slept with my share of vanilla guys who didn't have kink to explain why they expected me to be their sexual entertainment for the evening (with zero reciprocation) I have to agree somewhat with the anti side.

However, I like porn, and I like guys who like porn. Go figure

And porn makes girls think they have to lay there yelling "OH GOD" through the whole event.

I like porn that's soft-core with an element of good taste....

There was a time when, if I was bored and online, I'd go looking for tasteful bondage pics. But those days seem over since all the pics I ever seem to come across now are extreme, overly graphic and mostly just gross. There's nothing artful or stylish about them, which means there's zero attraction to me....

Focus.

I have no problem with porn. I have problems with specific practices within the porn industry. So I want to change those - and how society views porn stars so that it stops being "ok" to screw them over - and not ban porn.

About porn itself? It's wonderful - gives people (myself included) an outlet for thoughts/feelings/desires that they can't otherwise express. The fact that I've had gigabytes of porn stored on my hard drives over the years has nothing to do with this, of course .

Is it exploitation of people? Is stripping exploitation? Only answer I've got for that one is maybe, if you're dealing with idiots. If you can't separate fantasy from reality, you've got bigger problems than what sort of boink videos you like.

Porn used to be staring at nekkid women with staples through their navels.  Now it's watching videos online.

Porn has always pushed the boundaries. I suspect that it has had a lot to do with increasing public acceptance of oral and now anal sex.  And I assume that The Secretary (which could be called mainstream porn IMO) resulted in greater public acceptance of WIITWD.

Economically, I'd rather have a bunch of tiny studios making lots of movies than two or three monoliths making only major movies.  I'm a decentralist and don't trust centralized power.

The association of porn with malware bothers me.  Of course, that's the profit motive coupled with free porn.  They have to make their profit somewhere.

I do hear what jujubee said about it giving men unrealistic expectations.  Although that's always been there.  (Plus anyone going to bed with her has already exceeded expectations anyway...)

Porn is great. Keep your reality hat on and it can inspire some wonderful evenings.

I agree there's a lot of exploitation, both on the viewer and the performers, but to be honest, there's exploitation across the entire entertainment industry to some extent or other. You don't have to like it, but you ain't gonna stop it.

I don't know that I agree with this. If you're talking about rape, real rape, I've been taught that it's an act of violence and IMO, has nothing to do with sex, or porn, for that matter. If a male is that sick that he wants to rape someone, I don't think watching some porn is going to stop him. However, there are some that would say that porn encourages rape.

Yes, I read that article over there, too. However, the 20/20 report I was referring to spoke more specifically of the harm that could befall women in the industry, such as drug addiction resulting and poor self-esteem issues.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I think, ultimately, the problem with porn isn't the actual fact of it, in and of itself, but more of a problem with society's negative view towards sex, more specifically, towards women who are sexually liberated, sexually expressive, and comfortable with their own sexuality. I believe this attitude stemmed from the proliferation of christianity across the world and the onslaught of patriarchy. Even to this day, some anthropologists will discuss the "promiscuity" of matriarchal societies, particularly when discussing the spread of AIDS in Africa, which is another topic altogether.

I just got out of bed and my brain isn't fully functioning yet, this morning, so I hope I've managed to convey my opinions cohesively, regardless.

I always post in threads like this and come off looking like a rightwing tight assed religious nut case…but someone has to do it…lol

In this easy access impossible to regulate Internet world our children are being exposed to hardcore porn every day. Remember kids are embarrassed to talk sex with parents and parents are embarrassed to talk to their kids so the information about sex now comes from porn off the net. I’m just not too sure this is healthy for a 9-year-old girl or boy just developing their sexuality.

I have heard the argument that access to porn reduces sexual crimes…I don’t believe it. I think porn stimulates these people and increases crime. I’ve no statistics so it is just an opinion but how many people have you heard arrested for sexual crimes with a computer full of porn?

I am not against porn …just its easy access to children.

Butch

I'm more upset at politicos who use porn as an excuse to further insult our intelligence.

How about multi million dollar churches that don't pay a dime in taxes?

THAT is exploitation!

That has been dubiously discussed before and, despite the heavily feministic reduction of all rape to a strawman of aggression, clearly rape is a sexual assault.

The motivation for it is, frankly, irrelevant. It would be better described as an "act of opportunity" than anything else, if we want to get specific.

The only real question here is whether porn fuels the motivation for it in people for whom the motivation already exists.

Those are "harms" than befall a women just for being alive.

A topic which is interesting, because it would suggest that the negative finger-wagging at female porn stars for daring to be sexually prolific (and *gasp* maybe even enjoy it!) is happening because it is presumed that a sexually liberal woman must have something 'wrong' with her or must be getting exploited to have that mindset.

Fuck...I always sound like some sort of a nut job when I talk about the porn industry.

Here it goes. I have no use for people that take the easy way out. Whatever that means...lol. It gets weirder as I get older because I have increasing doubts about free will and other things that make us who we are.

But nonetheless, don't dig hookers, prostitutes, strippers, models, porn actors and on down the list. I just don't dig it when a person uses the lowest of their human attributes to make a go of it.

Is it shallow or sexist maybe, sort of? Don't dig dudes who peddle their flesh or are pimps.

Just want to see more from my fellow humans than their cocks and holes.

I have to agree that there are better ways to make a contribution to society and I hadn't looked at it from this angle either. There are a lot of different perspectives on this that hadn't occurred to me, here.

As for "easy access to children", I was exposed to porn through the Penthouse, Playboy, and Hustler magazines that my dad kept. I was looking at those for as far back as I could remember until my parents divorced, which would place that at around ages 5 and 6. That was well before internet porn.
