Lorenzo19 -> Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/26/2010 12:27:39 PM)

This is for people who believe there is an after life. Others will see it as nonsense.

Science would have us believe the sum total of our being is defined by our DNA, Brain and other odd bits of biology. This is hard for Me to swallow.

The brain et al, after death remains in this world and rots away along with everything it contains.

Therefore in the next life you would have NO
1) memory
2) personality
3) character
4) knowledge of right and wrong
5) experiences
6) wisdom
7) emotion
8) intellect

If what science tells us is true then, What the hell does this life matter? Why do We spend a hundred years here just to be a totally mindless bland creature in the next life? How could one identify loved ones in the next life if thier memories are rotting away in the brain?

A more sensible answer to Me is that the defining virtues of our being are contained in the soul. The brain merely acts as an interface to the soul thus enableing the soul to interact in a physical world.

Science, strangely enough, partially supports My conclusion. They say the brain is made of of neural networks. These networks are well understood and are applied to computers. They agree that the networks strength is in learning skills and are very poor with memory functions. This finding supports My conclusion because skills are a physical thing and memory is siritual.

Just something I think about. What are your thoughts?

What part of the brain is the antenna for the soul?

To test this theory we need to find out what material can deflect the soul signal. Then if we construct a room made out of this material and place a person in it the person will drop dead as the door closes. The soul signal will not be able to penetrate the room. However it could be a transdimensional soul signal, in which case we need to go back to the drawing board to come up with some advanced mathematics to isolate the soul signal from the brain.

A muh simpler way would be to disable the antenae.

Anyone who has been a member here for any length of time has to believe that the brain is over rated

I'd like to say that whilst science has identified many neural networks and regions of the brain which control different thought processes and bodily functions we are still only scratching the surface as far as the storage of memory and skills are concerned.

we can all drink alot more and make it easier to pumb that to the very depths.

Tonight I will be using The Macallans 12 yr old to explore those depths

Actually consider that the spirit in fact does not die and never has. It immediately pops out of the body while the rest of one, heart, feelings and body slink off in different directions and get denser with every fragmentation.

The brain is an organ and it dies but the soul/spirit does not.

Consider too that the body holds every single memory and experience so yeah it is accessible if you want to search for it. You want to know where you were in the 1700's? The information is there if you were around then.

People have so many different thoughts about life and death. Not all of them are true no matter how hard one might hang onto certain pov's for whatever reason.

So yeah it does matter. The progress you make in this life would affect this life, the next, if there is to be a next.

I dont think it is so much about whether you drank, swore or things like that but how much did you love yourself?

Learning to truly love and unconditionally accept oneself is a life long endeavor and sometimes 'being good' is not really self-loving at all.

In this life, at the moment of birth we have no:
1) memory
2) personality
3) character
4) knowledge of right and wrong
5) experiences
6) wisdom
7) emotion
8) intellect

Well, we might have some emotion and the start of an intellect but we don't posess those things coming into this life, why would the after-life be much different than being "re-born" into a different form of existance?  Heck, as much as I love my family there sure are other people from this life that I really don't want to have to bump into in the next one.

I actually believe that there is something after we die but I don't believe we retain the same form.  In other words, I am prepared to go to my death knowing it could be the utter end of me as I know me but the the full assurance I will continue to be.

Are you suggesting, eyesopened, that essence is in the brain and in the next life we will be blank slates again?

heartcream -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/26/2010 2:58:50 PM)

Hmm strongly, strongly disagree eyesopened. Strongly.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/26/2010 3:57:16 PM)

It also means that in the next life she might end up resembling someone she don't want to meet from this life.

eyesopened -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/27/2010 5:33:22 AM)

I'm not sure, of course.  How can anyone be sure what lies on the other side.  I was just pointing out that we are not born with a memory of what we may have been before.  In this body, memory is connected to the development of the brain.  We are born with a consciousness.  What is interesting is that babies are making brain connections at a fast rate, and then those that are not used, disconnect.  I'm not explaining this as a scientist would so I know I probably sound stupid but a short google of brain development will explain this better.  It means to me that the brain has potental that we really don't understand.

Does this mean I think the brain is everything?  No.  Because if it were, we humans would be much more alike.  What is intellect?  What is wisdom?  What makes one person so different than another?

I know that I have a spirit.  I know that my spirit is eternal.  I have not been able to fully know what part of me is strictly spirit and not influenced by or part of my physical, the memories I have, my perceptions, etc.  How much is physical, how much is spiritual.  I don't know because I am in this body at this time.  What I will be after this body is decayed, I don't know.  What I see in all religions is that there is an Energy that we are a part of and that this Energy draws us to it.  I don't expect anyone else to believe what I believe.  I don't expect anyone else to be me.

I was just pointing out that it could be possible that we go to the next world without memory, personality, etc. a clean slate perhaps.  I'm not convinced we will continue to be the same as we are in our bodies.

Let me explain further.  My grandfather died after a series of strokes and at his death was unable to communicate.  My own father has senile dememtia.  I am certain that these brain dysfunctions will not follow death because they are dysfunctions of the physical brain.

Can anyone tell me exactly how much of ourselves is brain function and how much is the soul itself?  Memory is tied to brain function, there are studies that suggest that other emotions can also be a part of brain fuction as well.  If something can be part of the physical and the physical dies then how will that be a part of the next world?

Aneirin -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/27/2010 6:43:38 AM)

I spent years pondering the afterlife, according to various religious perspectives, but now, I don't care, as what will happen will happen and that is that. So, in the meantime time to get on with life whilst I have it.

But, I am a believer that the brain is only part of our intelligence, not the whole of it, so in my day to day processes, thinking is not the only way forward, feeling also holds a par with thinking and there is another essence I have yet to put my finger on.

cloudboy -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/27/2010 7:11:13 AM)

I hope I can meet up with my cat in the afterlife, but he's probably moved on already to bigger and better things....

Smutmonger -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/27/2010 7:17:16 AM)

I think religion came up with "the soul" as a way to use fear of negation as a social thought control method.

We can watch the body disintegrate. If the body and the brain with it are part of both worlds then after decay it is dead to both worlds.

I cant tell you without doubt. I can say what I deduce. The simple answer is anything that will be needed in the next world will continue on in the next world. So the essence of our experience in this world must be contained in the soul.

To expound a little. If We are angry, sad, fearful, hateful in this life, then We will be angry, sad, fearful, hateful in the next world. A happy being in this world will be a happy being in the next world.

Lorenzo19 -> RE: Is the Brain Over Rated? (2/27/2010 2:14:36 PM)

I am not trying to convince anyone there is an after life. That would be for another thread. This thread is for those who already believe in an after life or simply curious about the brain/soul connection.

To carry My point further, think of this: Our essence is carried on the the next life unaltered and unbroken.
If one makes a hell of thier life in this world by filling it with hate and bad feelings, that person would feel out of place in heaven. Being around happy people makes unhappy people feel even more unhappy. Misery loves company. Unhappy people would not like heaven at all.

So, was hell created as a punishment or a kindness for those who choose misery? I would say a kindness . Hell was created to be a kindness to those who choose misery by a compassionate God/Deity/Karma/insert name here.
