JstAnotherSub -> computer help please!!! (2/25/2010 3:04:56 PM)

ok, i was sittin drinking coffee and talking on the phone and reading online and somehow i nearly dropped my keyboard.  i grabbed it, and must have hit some fukn f something key on the way down, because it then proceeded to shut down. no biggie i figure.

now, hours later, i get on to check work mail and read a bit on here, and the puter has gone insane.  when i click on something, such as leaving the main page from collarchat to the off topic thing, it opens a new tab. every damn time!

when i use the roller thingy, instead of scrolling down the page, it makes the page get larger and smaller....checking mail was quite the treat, and i am afraid to even attempt to pay bills.

tried system restore, and it would take me to the point where i clicked to start it, then it wont conitnue..

anyone know what fukn f key or some such i can hit to fix this?  i have cleaned ths disc, defragged and restarted...

thanks in advance for any help....

k this sounds like  a browser issue, go to your tools in browser, and click on tabs, and change it back  to what you had it set up ie, not opening new tabs everytime you click on a link
The browser zoom reset button is in "view" then "zoom", then click on reset
Good luck
Lucy

Hi...

Something you might try.

You may have had a program running at the time of the mishap.  If you did, go back into that program and then up to the menu bar...

File  Edit  View  History and so on...

Click on the view button and search down, or, one of the other menu items, like maybe Tools...

Look for something that will change a selection... it's like a switch.  A lot of times, that is what has happened.  ZOOM is another one of those items.  But, it's something like that.  It has nothing to do with your hard drive...

By the way, I have been messin with computers, software and hardware, for over 40 years.  But, i am a guy, so, what do I know...LOL

Write to me if you want more help...

Going on what's happening, I'd say your CTRL key got stuck when you dropped the keyboard. CTRL and mouse wheel up & down zooms in and out in firefox, for example. CTRL & click on link opens a new tab.

Try whacking both CTRL keys a few times. this worked for ages on one of my knackered keyboards. If that doesn't work, you'll need to get a new keyboard.

Immediately, what you can do is look at the Accessibility options on your PC. Somewhere you'll see "Onscreen Keyboard", which pretty much does what it says on the tin. You can chuck the physical one away and get thee to a Wal-mart.

Heh. Don't you just love when the simplest one is the best one?

Termyn8or -> RE: computer help please!!! (2/25/2010 7:31:46 PM)

This happened to me once and smacking did not work. It really was in settings or some shit. There are a hell of alot of options I would like to disable these days, and quite a few of them have something to do with the Ctrl key.

The mighty thwap method wins again. My original variant method I refer to as the malicious dragonkick of fixing.

I'm an IT Tech by trade. One thing you learn very early on is never eliminate the stupidly simple answer.

I'd say 95% of calls to IT Helpdesks never get more complicated than "Have you rebooted?"
