Dawn Brancheau's sister Diane Gross said SeaWorld ''was her dream''

I shudder to think what a sperm whale might do to you, then...

Aneirin -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 6:15:23 PM)

Sad it is, but the beast should not be caged in a pond performing tricks for a spectacle seeking crowd of humans.

heartcream -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 6:21:54 PM)

Yeah it sucks ass.

It is a tragedy. It is such a wonder to see these magnificent beasts up close. When I was at school we went to the zoo, and our assignment was that we had to pick one animal to watch it for two straight hours.

I chose the giraffes and by the end of the two hours I was almost crying in how much I loved them, I remain head over heels for giraffes. In the zoo they are outside with lots of space, not in a cage but still a giraffe in Canada and no matter what the giraffe's or any of the amazing animals were free, had the space they need and deserve.

Then again I would not wish not one giraffe (or any other animal) to be caged for our purposes. I would rather them out and free.

I did something similar to that at school, but was not requested to watch it for two hours, I just did, the creature or creatures were just fascinating, Leaf cutting ants.

FR

Made me laugh slightly when they described the whale as having a history of violence.

Aneirin -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 6:32:04 PM)

I suppose it's description is a clue, killer whale.

Arpig -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 8:41:35 PM)

What Aneirin said....years ago I read a little scuba diving guide for the west coast...it had a section on what to do if a shark attacks you, with all sorts of suggestions. The section on killer whale attacks stated that the only known defense if an orca attacks is prayer....and that was ineffective.

domiguy -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 9:21:24 PM)

I always thought there had never been a documented killer whale/human attack in the wild?

Arpig -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 9:26:22 PM)

Could be Domi...I didn't write the pamphlet, I just read it

fluffypet61 -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 9:26:33 PM)

This attack wasn't "in the wild".

A bit of Googling supports this statement.

I was at Marineworld in NoCali many years ago, and went to the killer whale show. About 5 minutes into it, the trainers stopped, apologized to the audience, and told us that the whale simply didn't want to perform that day.
I thought it was great that the trainers were concerned enough to call it off instead of trying to get her to do something she obviously didn't want to do.

Aneirin -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 11:02:23 PM)

But, it is sort of good to know that there still are dangerous creatures on this planet, even if in this case it was a captive dangerous creature, it is still dangerous and should be treated as such,  and with a whole lot of  respect, but instead humans like to demonstrate their mastery over such creatures by getting them to perform circus tricks

GreedyTop -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/25/2010 11:27:10 PM)

one of the things pointed out in a news report here was that the particular whale had spent the majority of its life in captivity.  The guy they spoke to said that the people who are advocating putting the whale back into the wild would be similar to taking your family dog, turning it loose in the wilderness, and saying "Oh, I'm sure my dog will survive!"

heartcream -> RE: Killer Whale Kills (2/26/2010 12:14:58 AM)

Then again dogs have been domesticated for a much longer time than the Orca. Because the whale was born into captivity and would not have the skills and training to handle the wild blue open, the deep dark under, I think the layer of 'domesticity' would be such a thin veneer as to drive the whale cuckoo.

I bet it is true that Killer Whales wouldnt hurt people out in their indigenous territory. Unless the person was needing to be dead, hehe.

Seriously they seem like such conscious beings. The Hippo is an animal you do not want to be in the path of. They will kill you like you are dust.

Remember those Elephants running people over in India? Lemme see I find it...

Fed up Elephants

I am not going to watch them I saw something of it a coupla years ago and couldnt bear to watch again.

This is much more appealing with two young elephants playing around a bit...

If you ever get a chance, take the truck ride through the San Diego Wild Animal Park - the giraffes put their huge heads on your shoulder and use their long Domi-tongues to take food from your hand. Awesome experience. And you are much less likely to be killed.

You know the whale could be thinking its playing rather than attacking. Being in captivity it is exposed to all different things from humans. I mean the whale doesn't "know" human lung capacity or body is more fragile than its own. So while yes it could have been eyeing this woman thinking she is an enemy -- he could have also saw a chance to play OR i wonder if it could have thought her pony tail was some kind of food? Especially if they sometimes feed the whale by holding food in the air or dangling same.

There is also a descrepency as this article says it grabbed her by the pony tail not the waist as the op article states.

That he had her in his mouth and blood appeared could mean they don't know the harm their teeth can do to a human, just as sometimes dogs don't realze it when they are playing. He also let her go and reached up and got her again, who knows if he thought it was a game?

They are using words like violent and attack because she was killed, and its sad, because they really have no clue what the whale was thinking or doing. Its easy to make it into a frenzy of negative about teh whale when you use words such as violence, blood, and attack.

People see this as a negative concept of the whale and "killer" concept, when it simply could have been the whale thinking it was playing or being fed. I find it sad that they associate it with the animal negatively doing something just because while tragic someone was killed.
