Status: offline 		Have any of you had any problems with your accounts being hacked?  Someone took over control of my account, deleted my written profile and all my email archives.  I have no idea how it could have happened.  I have virus protection.

Status: offline 		Virus protection only protects you from known virii (is virii plural for virus?) not from hackers.  You need security software to help prevent from hackers - even then, if they are good they can get in.  I believe I read somewhere that awhile back hackers managed to get into the Dept of Defense's computers - though I don't recall if they managed to mess up any data.

I've never had My CMail account hacked into.  Did you give your password to someone? 

A good prevention method is to change your password regularly, make sure it contains a mixture of numbers, letters, upper and lowercase.  While that isn't foolproof, it does help.

Use strong passwords. Make them at least eight characters long, a mixture of upper and lower case. Have them include at least one numeric digit and if the system allows, one special character. 

Don't use the same password for everything. If you do, the hackers only have to get it once and then you have laid your life bare.

Remember that gaming, porn and "adult-related" sites are MUCH more likely than others to have spammy ads that install keyloggers on your machine. If you visit these sites (and you do, because here you are) about once a month run through the full malware removal protocol at Major Geek.  No one antivirus tool will detect and remove everything, so performing regular computer hygiene is A Good Idea.

Status: offline 		My AOL account got hacked. It was not on my side, and they admitted it. Didn't change the fact I had to change all my passwords, even though I had never stored them anywhere.

Sometimes the hacking goes on on the other side. I think they will tell you that it is much easier that way, unless things have changed drastically.

It's possibly safer to use numerical and special characters. While at the outset that makes bruteforcing more time consuming, I'd wager this leads to multiple uses of the same password, and easy to remember passwords with a simple scheme being more frequent, such as just using a typical password and adding 1 to the end (which is hilariously common), or the special character substitution of $ for S. Just as often I've seen them in a file named passwords.txt...and accidentally shared over networks and via p2p....*facepalm*

Status: offline 		I am starting to think that using weak passwords is OK too, because they all expect strong ones. One extra character and it is bounced.

What's more misspellings can work wonders.

Then how do you have control of it now?  Someone took control and then just handed it back????  What is more likely is that you pressed the wrong button, or you're using Firefox, which is well-known on this site for not displaying all of the buttons, links and features.

Pull up Firefox and IE side by side and you should see.  People complain about the formatting functions being gone in the forum reply box, like this one.  Quite a while back we had an amusing thread with someone asking where the bold/underline/italic/etc was, and some of us saying, "look right there, right above the box", "there's nothing there", "yes there is", "no there's not"... well, turns out they had Firefox.

That's just one example.
