Um . . . breakfast food is my area of expertise. I even have a cookbook with over 365 ways to cook an egg. So when I saw this OP, I knew we weren’t talking breakfast toppings. Despoite the common American view of the Belgian waffle as breakfast food, is NOT always served at breakfast. It is often served as dessert. I think it is important to focus on “dessert toppings”, otherwise we are comparing apples and oranges.

I reject all your pancake style toppings and remind you that this waffle is NOT made from pancake batter! Belgian waffles are a lighter batter and the higher grid would cause grossly copious quantities of sugary breakfast syrup or butter to be trapped in those large, square, deep pockets. . . aaack!

Those deep pockets hold many delicious treats like, walnuts with caramel sauce drizzled over them. When I think of Belgian waffle toppings, things like, truffles, Grand Marnier and the wide variety of liquor, candy and fruit toppings come to mind . . . not breakfast toppings.

i have fond memories of belgian waffles when i was in college in my youth. sigh.

i agree, normal waffles are for brekky with sausage and maple syrup.

belgian's might be eaten at brekky (after a late night), but are really for dessert.

pecans. you forgot pecans [:)]

Justme696 -> RE: What are the best toppings for Belgian Waffles? (2/16/2010 1:26:27 PM)

warm cherries(in sirup) and whipcream

dreamofthemoon -> RE: What are the best toppings for Belgian Waffles? (2/16/2010 1:46:45 PM)

Powdered sugar, strawberries (or cherries) with whipped cream (or this ice cream phenomena sounds intruiging, too). [:)]

heartcream -> RE: What are the best toppings for Belgian Waffles? (2/16/2010 1:53:18 PM)

I thought that the point was to get to eat copious amounts of melted buttery and maple syruppy goodness?

But, I understand part of what you are saying.  Many hotels now offer "belguin walfles" as part of their continental breakfast.  I refuse to eat them.  I would rather have the cold cereal.

So do I get to eat the waffle on you or you on my waffle?

JonnieBoy -> RE: What are the best toppings for Belgian Waffles? (2/16/2010 5:41:58 PM)

Hmmm ... me thinks da Bear has been browsing Misst's recipe books again !

(Boggles the mind to now think on the variation of "toppings" which may be going through Bears mind at this point)

Bear ... mind what you're doing with that Waffle Iron ! ... we wouldn't want any nasty little accidents through lack of safety precautions ... so be sure to keep it a safe distance whilst applying any topping.

(Ponders if I'll ever be able to look at a Waffle with a straight face again)

I promise if the waffle iron touches delicate skin, I will kiss and lick it all better!
