Hexacopter

If you are into aviation in any form you are really gonna enjoy this!!

thornhappy -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/12/2010 7:51:18 PM)

Fantastic!

winterlight -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/12/2010 8:27:30 PM)

Cool, it sounds like bees buzzing.

I have to wonder if they made a real one how it would deal with wind shear etc.

Paint that thing in glo-in-the-dark paint and fly it around at night and you could really have some fun with the neighbors! I bet you'd generate a whole lot of UFO sightings.

Wow...that's a neat little machine!

ResidentSadist -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/13/2010 2:44:49 AM)

looks like 8 blades are better than 1

You sure about that? Count 'em again. There are only 6. Hence the term "hexa" meaning six.

Well if Gillette made them, they'd sure have 8 blades.

That technology is known as octorazor.

dreamerdreaming -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/13/2010 12:46:16 PM)

Awesome, thanks!

rockspider -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/14/2010 4:50:54 AM)

That is absolute awesome. My experience is more in to fixed wing aviation but i do know a bit about rotorwings. It has long been understod that multiwing helicopters has some absolute benefits over the conventional single rotor machines. The problem has always been that multirotor is extremely complex to build and maintain making them out bounds for anybody who has to consider money in operation. That leaving only airforces to operate them. Good examples is the Chinok C 47, the Piasecki (flying Banana) and a few others. This mickey mouse hexacopter seems acording to the video to beat each of those in both stability in hoover and load carrying capacity. Well if i was CEO of Bell, Chinok, Eurocopter, Sikorsky or any other similar company i would have the designer of this thing on my payroll tomorrow, irespective of his price. I smell a new Bert Rutan behind this thing.

Here is a half hour vid where he demonstrates a 4 prop version and an 8 prop version. I don't understand the language, but it looks like he is at an expo of some kind. http://www.mikrokopter.de/ucwiki/

Aneirin -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/14/2010 6:05:50 AM)

Excellent machine, but I just wonder how long it will be before it has a military application. I say this as most breakthroughs in technology tend to be used for military purposes first before they become of use to civillians.

I also wondered about wind shear, but with the GPS position holding properties of the machine, if it gets blown off position, it has the ability to beat back to position. Perhaps a more developed model could have a more aerodynamic shape so as not to be so much of a wall to the wind, enclosed rotors perhaps, hey, flying saucer looking.

Ah idea, get them out to Afghanistan armed with Coke  and there teach the Taliban to sing.

You realize, of course, that the military already has far, far more advanced UAVs, right? Theirs are the size of cars and can take off and fly vast distances armed with predator missiles. The smaller ones are designed to be carried by ground troops for aerial recon on the fly.

As cool as that is, I found this to be much cooler.

TheHeretic -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/14/2010 7:39:19 AM)

Ah, German engineering...  "Why have one moving part, when you could have three?"

Outlier2 -> RE: Hexacopter: This is REALLY COOL!!! (2/14/2010 12:47:21 PM)

Here is the English language main page

http://www.mikrokopter.de/ucwiki/en/MikroKopter

It is complete with technical information and a list of videos.
they show the original one that was on wimp and others.

Hmmmm. I think you should have a look at the Chinok 47 then. It holds the record for most parts in a flying machine.
