DS, I guess I am still a student of the command of the English language. I guess I'll elaborate. Charity begins at home. My charity begins with family and chosen family. But even with them, I have a bunch of money in the drawer, it is for bills, the next round of checks I must write. Even among them I say "I don't have it" or "I can't afford it". The simple fact is even if someone is starving, if I don't pay my bills then I will be starving, or homeless or whatever. Now where did that get us ? So you are starving under a bridge, and I have a $400 gas bill. If I don't pay, move over, as I will be soon living in the next box to you under that bradge. And starving. Say 30-4- years ago we still had a viable and productrive economy in this country. In times like that, despite the debt we were doing alright. Under those conditions, lending a helping hand is nothing short of divine. But now, the way things are, I couldn't care less (monetarily) about people in bumfuct Egypt somewhere. It doesn't mean I don't care, but writing blank checks which our descendents must pay should not be an option. Sure, you hit some hard times ? Well here's a credit card with which you can buy a house and a new car. I'll just sit back and pay the interest on it until I die. Of course, I got it whether or not I can afford it. Fat chance. Get it ? Conditions are forcing us to kill ourselves with debt. People are buying toilet paper on credit cards. Meantime, where are the people with enough money to insure that the next ten generations of their family will be born with a silver spoon in their mouth ? Where is their altruism while their media plays upon ours ? Most people don't realize that there are people on this planet who are so rich they could pay off the national debt with ease. They don't and I know why they don't. As such any charity on my part is well defined and precisely directed. I did not take umbrage at the traffic jam caused by normal, good people taking donations down to the local TV station for Haiti. It was an inconvenience but I put it in perspective. People are hurting, they are in trouble and need help. People were donating leftover wheelchairs and other medicval supplies which cannot be used over again here because our leaders need more money. They brought canned goods, and maybe a few things they even like, instead of those cans in the back of the pantry left by their great Grandparents. It's actually good to know that so many have such a giving spirit. But think again. Uncle Zeb's broke leg is all healed up and he doesn't need the wheelchair or crutches anymore. The babies are grown up so they don't need the formula. Bill Bob's knee has healed and he doen't need the brace anymore. All of this shit was paid for by insurance or something most likely. They are not giving, they are cleaning house. But if it does some good, great. Now forget th credit card, all the junk in the attic, and that bank account that you choose to forget about and use only as a cushion. Get out your wallet. Look at the money in there and count it. Calculate your charity based on that and I'd bet the donation would be quite smaller. By contrast those who spend our money without our consent will do so as long as it makes them look good. Sorry if I have destroyed anyone's rose colored view of our position here, but the fact is we are broke. T
