Status: offline 		I have a problem with my central heating system, and living in a rented apartment I decided to call my landlord, a housing association.

So I call them, get through the automated menu system and get to speak to someone on the other end who informs me that there is nobody to take my call (so I'm there thinking 'What are you doing then?') and if I care to leave my name and my telephone number someone will call me back.

Half an hour later someone calls me back. They ask for me by name and I tell them that it is I who is speaking with them on the other end of the telephone.

They then tell me, 'I just need to ask you a couple of security questions if I may.'

I tell them to go ahead.

So I hear 'Can you please give me your full name?'

So I give them my full name, just as they asked for at the start of the call and just as I confirmed at the start of the call.

Then I hear 'Can you please give me your full telephone number?'

So I give them my full telephone number.

Are these really security questions or should we just face facts and call them stupidity questions?

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Status: offline 		Whenever I use a card to pay at the supermarket of HW store, I'm required to sign, and theoretically, a very impressively written computer program analyzes my handwriting compared to otehr samples and verifies that it's really me.

In actual fact, the damn thing will accept any signature...

Then there's the one in the airport "Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?"

Status: offline 		It's like the cops around here when they write you a ticket. He takes your license back to his car, runs everything through a computer and knows it all pretty much. Before he does so he asks "What year car is this ?". When he comes back with your citation he asks again what year the car is.

Since you didn't put this in Humor I figure it's a real question. I think there may be two factors here. It's a psychological thing. In the case of the cops, they are wondering if you will rattle. How sure are you af the origin of said car, and, did you do a tag/title job on it ? (that's where you buy a clunker, steal a nice one of the same model and switch the serial numbers).

The other thing is to establish superiority. Really, asking you for your phone number right after they just called yo may seem silly, but it's not. They assume a superior position. And fret not, the person you talked to on the phone did not institute that policy.

In the US two main things are used for real security questions. One is the last four digits of your social security number, another is your Mother's maiden name. For a few things the billing zip code will work, like for credit card purchases or account information. Almost anything else is just playing with you, or there is a slight possibility that the call is being recorded and they want your own voice to state your name for example. It could just be for internal record keeping purposes, like to prove that they're active in assisting you.

Others might use a security question like "what's your pet's name ?". I got so pissed remembering all that shit I changed them all to "I don't remember". I think some ISPs use this, but anyone can get on the phone and, for example cancel your car insurance. What a way to fuck with someone eh ?

Much as I hate to say it, all this makes a good case for thumb or retinal scanners.

Status: offline 		I prefer a real person make out a bill- to a computer.  I also prefer a shabby store front - rather then state of the art.  If the heat is not real high even better.

Notice on so many things- buy a house or a car- you sign like 12-20 papers. What happens if one of those is forgotten?  Has anyone said- heavens no- I am backing out- due to the one paper?   Same deal for insurance.  Then so many thing take up 20 minutes of time where as 3 minutes should be all it takes.

I also think grocery stores ought to deliver.

When I get the energy I am going to make a vid on why the state may title a house- like they do a car.  (rather then the county)

Status: offline 		When I flew about a year after 9/11 as I was going through security, in my bag was one of those little swords for opening letters which I forgot was in there.  Besides asking me if it was mine, he asked if I intended to use it as  a weapon.

I flew domestically in Canada the year after 9/11...and they took away a nail file, tweezers, and nail clippers, explaining that they are "sharp objects" and can be used to harm someone.

Right...and the little man with the RFID chip attached to his tiny submarine that will pilot it to a safe place in your body so you don't shit it out 6 hours after you take the pill...You will of course, shit -him- out and he will ride his yellow submarine to the pickup and resizing location being put into every waste water treatment plant in the country.  It's all part of Obama's nefarious plan!

Status: offline 		I get asked the same questions when I am dealing with Social Security (SS for id). I have to spell my mothers' maiden name, tell them what year I was born, city and state that I was born in...next thing you know, SS will being asking my blood type, how old Lizard is and how often do I have sex (not telling). I can imagine what y'all have to go through in airports. At the bus station, the cops will come out with a dog to investigate for drugs (got a mule about 2 or 3 weeks ago with about 50 lbs of pot). Heck, they ran a check on my mother when she was waiting for me at the bus station.

Yep, I became suspicious of the credit card signature validation when I used my friends card, signed her name 'BITCH' and no red flags were raised!

The good news is we are a few years off on this.  One key thing- is one does have the right to refuse medical care.  DRs "orders" are fine- but with me- this is a decision of which I participate.   The technology does exist to track and trace.  Just something to keep in mind as we rush into the brave new world.  Thanks for the shout.  :-)

We discussed this for my father who has some dementia. Unfortunately he would pick at it until he bled so we didn't.

Usually you implant them in the sneakers but Alzheimer patients have been known to wander in slippers.

Status: offline 		Another airport story. Leaving Las Vegas International a couple years ago, I was allowed to take 3 books of matches on the airplane (in my pocket). They confiscated the other 3. Don't ask...I have no clue..
