Yesterday, I allowed my nephew to play on the computer and since then, it is running slow. I have performed several anti-spies and anti-virus programs. I am having difficulty uploading pages (no problem with CM). I use Hughes Net since I live out in the boondocks. All the lights are on the modem are on, with the middle one flashing, like it usually does.

Have you done a disc clean-up?

You can also do a computer restore.

Restore is the way to go.  Create a restore point 3 days ago so you will know it's nothing he changed.

Type 'system restore' into your system search and it will take you to the function.

You will also be 3 days younger.

I restore to the 22rd. I did it 3 times just to be safe.

It is having problems with accessing our bank accounts. I ran Ad-aware, Norton and fixin' to see if Windows Defender is up to date.

Did everything as advised and still...I had to wait 5 minutes while accessing my bank account for it to come up *was dealing with the SS people about the rest of my funds*.

May I add that this is a Windows 7 computer (a hell of a lot better than Vista).

Have you interviewed your nephew as to what exactly he did on the computer, what he clicked on, what sites he visited, whatever? Might give you a clue.

Click a place on the map on this site http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/ then click the start test button. Don't download anything, just use their free test.

Hmm, sounds like something might have gotten planted on there. anti spyware/virus scanners don't detect everything. Restore and defrag and if that doesn't help i'd say a trojan or other malware got planted.

Try restarting your modem/router and let it cool down for ~5min or so before starting it again.
Try and see if it works better with a different webbrowser, and empty the Temporary Internet Files folder and check that it's set to around 10-20Mb.
If nothing of those works it's probably a virus/trojan
And if itäs just the bank site that is slow, the problem is probably on their side.

I use this for malware:   Malwarebytes

It's free and has found and removed things that other software misses.

Man, I am glad Comcast doesn't do that. I'd have to sit in the corner every day.

Edited to add....Ooops, I didn't read far enough and it appears that you found out this was your problem.

Check with Hughes Net.  We use a Starband satellite and if we use too much bandwidth they start to limit how much we are allowed to have.  This makes one computer run very slow and there is no way we can run both computers when we've been limited.  After a number of days when we don't exceed our bandwidth they let us have normal internet back.  Starband always sends us an email when they've cut back out bandwidth.  I'm not sure if Hughes Net sends you a note or not.

One way to find hidden programs sucking up your bandwidth is to turn off your modem and reboot the computer....you should get some fail to start notices as the hidden progs try to access the net and fail...either that or go into your firewall and remove everything that is OK'd and see what pops up.

Some common reasons for lag are processes running or connection speed. To test your connection speed:

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

If your speed is ok, then you need to look and see if there are new processes running by using your task manager. You'll need to look up (google or microsoft.com) whaich processes are supposed to be running or not. Alternatively, you can just stop random processes until you find the one that is slowing you down. Start with the ones that are using a lot of CPU.

good luck

If the problem was with the ISP case closed. But I think I would look into shopping around for another. That bandwidth must've been pretty limited to slow down so much. All that SSL and crap for secure pages does not take all the long to load. I would not take it laying down at least.

I have heard that quite a few ISPs intend to do something like this or to charge by the MB, it is not surprising. It's just the mo' money theory at work. I wouldn't put up with it though. As far as I know they have never done it to me. This is on sbcglobal second tier. Unlimited phone included is $47 a month. There is no longdistance on that line, we got cells and a magicjack for that. I've hit 3MB/sec on P2P while another PC was viewing a streaming video and had no problems.

Also there is an error on that speed test page. It's simple just to Google for one though. I think cnet and the pcworld or something like that have similar tests. Usually they want at least your zipcode. Most of them don't want much more, some maybe your type of connection but that is usually about it. Now how many MB/sec you get, well whether that is good or bad varies.

Basically they complicated the whole mess, just like they did when they allowed free marketeers into the utility business. Who's you gas company ? Among my neighbors there are several, even though the same main line feeds the whole street. Every year they come around trying to sell gas. The deals always look good until you read the fine print. Why would an ISP be any different ?
