How about finding out why the kid is playing truant in the first place, and starting from there? I speak from experience. I played truant a lot in my last three years of schooling, did a lot of detention, different things were tried, but nobody ever really sat down with me and talked with me over why I actually chose not to go to school. I tell you for why I played truant. I ran away from home a couple of times due to my parents being divorced and as I was educated in the 'streaming system' they downgraded me from the top stream to the middle stream, so when I went to school and attended lessons I knew all of what was being taught anyway and it became boring. I thought I knew it all. Actually I knew sod all but I didn't realize that until I had turned 19. But if you had tagged me at 15 for not going to school I sure would have found another way to rebel and it might have had more serious consequences. It's very easy to find fault and apportion the blame in such a situation but I feel it's much better to look at it, with the kid included, as a problem solution type of scenario. Truancy is a cop out, it's not facing up to problems, it's avoiding or running away from your problems and I feel that this is where you should confront the kid and say 'right, you think you're adult enough not to be in school, but are you adult enough to face up to your own issues and deal with them in an adult way?' Truancy can be caused by all sorts of things, bullying, a difficult home situation, problems with a teacher, a lack of discipline, and it's all very well saying the kid 'should' do this and 'must' do this, but hardly any teenager aged 15 or 16 thinks like we do and they certainly don't have our life experience, insight or knowledge. That saying, there's no excuse not to get an education, no excuse at all. I personally think that community service is the way forward when dealing with truancy. Once the kid discovers that they could be spending a lot of evenings and weekends doing menial work or shovelling shit then school will probably become much more attractive.
