My sister now has had some time to grieve and is soon ready for a new cat.

There is one glitch tho.  Her husband is allergic to cats.

So- she asked me to see what I could learn.

I see some breeds claim to be hypo allergenic- that it is the cat saliva and not the fur that makes the up to 5 cat allergens.

So to score a nice cat where she can still keep her husband- what to do???

I see they want like $5000.00 for one... which is out of the budget.

They had a cat before, wasn't he allergic to that one?

Have they looked here? Hypoallergenic Cats

This one has tips for reducing the allergens...

Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds

Wikipedia has some stuff too....

Wikipedia

The only sure fire "hypoallergenic" cats are going to be purebreed, and the rarer breeds at that. If they don't want to spend the money (I love my cat, but she was free, I wouldn't have paid), then they need to have another alternative.

LT, while your suggestion is very good, unless the cat can be taught to shovel snow and take out the garbage, well, those are two of the few things that those pesky annoying husbands are good for (til your sons are old enough to do it, lol)

It is the dander that creates problems that trigger allergies for many people; and it can also trigger asthma (that's me), shedding skin is dander, other known allergens are saliva and urine (how do you get an animal without those things?), I have difficulty believing there is a hypo-allergenic cat.  Cats are blech

My cat might attack you for that one, lol.

The "hypoallergenic(ness)" of a cat is similar to dogs. There are cats that shed less and even some who like poodles and terriers don't shed at all. Some of them are really cute, too. You can see them in the middle link on my above post.

How do you get a cat not to: shed skin, salivate, or produce urine?  I am curious about this because I don't see it happening.

You can't. Anymore than you can get a dog to do it either.

What I don't seem to understand though is that they apparently had a cat before, so how did they deal with the hubby's allergies with that one?

You can suddenly become allergic, same thing with asthma.  It can build over time.  I became asthmatic as an adult; after a bad ragweed allergy season.  Things that never bothered me before are triggers now.  It's really weird.  My doc said these things sometimes happen with people.

The Sphynix cats are born without fur.  Is that what you are talking about?

The guy is a good bread winner.

Keep him busy at work is my feeling.

--When mom lived out here- they stayed with her.  I seen him in full suffering.   Likely she will get a cat either way- it just would be nice if it wasnt a burden on the household.

I wonder if there is a way of testing allergy to cats and maybe one brand wont be as bad...

I am highly allergic to cats. However last year my stepdaughter went to college up here and her cat stayed here. No problems with this one, it is a Himalayan. The only breed I've encountered so far that didn't cause me immediate distress.
