I have smoked for many years, and now I am trying to quit.  I have tried 34 times to quit and although I did quit for five years I ended up going back to it again.  Ooops.  So here I am, on the patch, trying to quit.  The problem is that I get a physical feeling in My throat when I want a cigarette that does not seem to want to go away.  I could really use some insight.  It sure makes Me irritable and cranky, let Me tell you that.  It is almost embarassing.

SK, I can only tell you what worked for me.
You have to continually tell yourself and convince yourself WHY YOU WANT TO QUIT.  I wanted to quit because...I hated waking up hacking every morning, I hated the smell of my fingers from the nicotine, I hated the feeling that I was dependent on the damn things...like a Friken Test Rat, I hated going to an airport and being put in a glass room with all smokers when I travelled, I felt like I was in the zoo. I hated the price of ciggarettes continually going up and I knew damn well they would kill me or at the very least, make me much unhealthier than I would be other wise. Then I went cold turkey for two weeks. Yes it was terribley difficult, but once I got through it, I never looked back. I have no urge to ever smoke again.
I hope you make it .....  Good luck,  Kevin

Sir Kenin, it's withdrawl just like anything addicting--and you have to ride the ugly beast, don't  let it ride you---stay aware of the signs of crankiness---and do not give in----as Kevin said, develop a mantra--something to refocus elsewhere----Good Luck and I am very proud of you!

Sir Kenin...i quit several months ago with the help of nicotine lozenges. These give you an oral dose of nicotine which decreased the withdrawl, moreso than the patch.  You CAN do it!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. I smoked for over 23 years. I met my Dom online and knew I would have to quit once we were together. I tried to quit a few months earlier and did really well for awhile. But, then the stress of life and getting divorced drove me back to them again. I have quit now only because I live with my Dom and smoking isn't allowed.

I smoked for many years too like you, but finally quit when I realized that it would kill me sooner than if I didn't. Someone I know quit using some kind of inhaler, and there is also a very good book. I will email you these when I find them. Good luck to you.

I smoked 1-2 packs of Marlboro reds for about 8 years.....and have been a non-smoker now for 18 years. How? Only way I could do it was when my desire to NOT smoke became stronger than my desire to light up. I woke up coughing and spitting brownish-green shit up and tore the pack in half. Never smoked again. Hang in there SK.

I haven't had a smoke in over 20 yrears and I sstill get a craving once in awhile while driving.
It goes away in about a minute or less. They ALWAYS go away. That's my point.
At first it may take 5-10 minutes, be patient, it WILL go away.

Take it one second at a time if necessary. Just focus on today, tomorrow will take care of itself.
Keep on keeping on it toke me 10 years to get the final victory.

Mr. Pete

I really appreciate everyone's insight.  I am caving in about once a day, even with this patch.  I will keep trying.  I like smoking, but I can not afford to smoke.  I have other, better things to spend My money on.

Thanks again and any further input is certainly welcomed.

Master is quitting a 40 a day habit, He has been on the patches for 7 weeks now and He still caves in and has the occasional cigarette. I figure as long as it is only ONE and it's only every few days it doesn't really count I am hoping as we go further along that in time the craving will ease. He is used to reaching for a cigarette in times of stress, and He has a surgery coming up soon and anything connected with hospital stresses Him out (vicious circle ).

He now has $60 a week more in His pocket - but we are figuring out what else we can spend it on! I will have to try and keep Him off eBay......

Don't cave, SK.  It will only lessen your resolve and you'll be back to smoking all the time again.  When that tightness in your throat comes, have a glass of water.  When you get the urge to smoke, do a few jumping jacks or run a few flights of stairs.  The craving will go away.  Keep carrot or celery sticks handy, too.  It'll give your hands something to do.

I was a pack-a-day smoker for 27 years (from age 13 to 40), and when I met Master, I quit cold turkey.  No patch, no gum.  I just quit.  Of course, it helped that when I asked Him to give me a hand with it after smoking just one cigarette the first week after I "quit," He devised something so heinous to me that I'll do whatever it takes to avoid the punishment for smoking.

You can do this.  And it's my opinion that the patches and such are just crutches.  You're still putting nicotine in your body, so you've not really quit the habit.  Lose the patches, tell yourself you're quitting (and that's final!), and I guarantee you within just a couple days, your lungs are going to be thanking you.  And then your tastebuds will start thanking you, and your nose will start thanking you, because you'll be tasting and smelling things you've not really tasted and smelled in years.  And then, there will come the day when you walk into a room full of smokers, and go home with that smell all over you, realize that's how you used to smell, and wonder how anyone could stand to get near you.

Yes, I'm a rabid non-smoker now.  And I gained 50 lb since I quit.  But I feel better than I have in years, and that's a good thing.

That is my exact thought as well.  I have quit a few things after having this realization.  Unfortunately, i have not hit that point in regards to smoking.  I know for me, any attempts to quit will be fruitless until i am of that mind set. I have no doubt the day will come when i wake up and know that i am done.

For me, smoking is habitual in regards to what i am doing.  Sitting in front of the computer, talking on the phone, morning cup of coffee, driving etc. so i have modified the activities that make me want to smoke.  I have banned smoking in the house...and in the car.  I am trying to make smoking inconvenient in hopes of finding that mind set.  Rather than focusing on quiting something i enjoy, i am realizing what a hassle smoking has become (and CA's strict smoking laws help in this respect).

I wish you the best of luck.  It's not easy...and from my standpoint as a smoker, this will be one of the greatest accomplishments you achieve...

Have you tried putting pictures of some of the 'better things' around the house, dashboard of car, at work... to remind you of what not smoking is gonna pay for?   Do you want a smoke more than you want "that"(what ever "that" is)?

As a Dom, it's time for you to dominate or atleast start disciplining yourself. What would you do to have a sub/slave stop smoking?

For every cigarett you buy, run a few horse hairs through them from the tip to the filter using a needle. Cutt the hair from the needle leaving in the horse hair. For every cigarett you smoke, you should force yourself to give up something.

As for the cravings, you're just going to have to detox yourself like alcoholics, caffine additics, and drug additics do. "You can do it!"
