ORIGINAL: EbonyWood It was clearly racist as you chose to attach "of African descent" to your description of the obnoxious denizens. Why did you choose to do that if not to point to the fact they are black? Own your words. It will make it easier for you to be moderated/ignored for your offensiveness. By the way, lack of care if other people are offended is a hallmark of the racist. You don't have to mention it. First, I owe neither you nor anyone an explanation for anything I say. If you choose to think I'm racist for that or for not caring what random strangers on a message board think of it, that's your right. It makes no difference to me because your opinion of me doesn't matter. It does not affect my life in any way. Second, the woman in question happens to be black. The area of town is known for crime, predominantly committed by black people. Attaching the descriptor is accurate, if unfortunate. It doesn't reflect how I feel about black people, in general, only the common perception of that area of town. Third, if the woman had been Caucasian and this had happened in another area, say Independence, and I said the area was known for a high population of white trash rednecks, it would be no less accurate but I'm willing to wager you wouldn't have taken offense to it. That would be equally racist of you, but I wouldn't have been offended by it or commented on it because, again, your opinion isn't really important. Now, if you'd like to ask how I feel about black people or people of any other race, feel free. I'll tell you. But I won't own a misconception that you've decided to place on me just because it will make you feel better about yourself.
