Status: offline 		... are there any things which you immediately exclude from being part of the clear out?

What are they? Why? What relationship do you have with these objects?

Also, have you ever thrown something out and regretted it later on?

Status: offline 		I immediately exclude photos from clearing out, art, all living things, my grandmother's blanket chest and my jewelry. Most everything else is negotiable.

Status: offline 		I clear out at least once a year. I'll be clearing out majorly within the next 6 months to get ready for a move this year.

I'm not one to hang on to things. There are very few things that are off limits. The only things I can think of that are off limits are a couple of sentimental items from my husband, handmade items/pics/papers/etc...from my daughter and the items received from Master.

Other than those..anything else is fair game and once I get rid of something I never look back. Once it's gone it's gone so I never regret it and I never miss it.

Status: offline 		The only absolute would be the family photo albums. Even my books might go on the chopping block since most of them are replaceable except for my Grandmothers old bible which has our family tree completely filled out on that side. The family tree written in my grandmothers hand is priceless to me, but I could, if I had to, write it up again but the photos can never be replaced. I don't recall ever throwing out anything (or selling it on Ebay!) that I truly regret. I am sad that my mother lost her jewlery case at an airport because it had my grandmothers wedding ring in it and I would have liked to have it one day as a keepsake, but it's long gone.

Status: offline 		My paintings (not me as the artist), my books, my sewing machine and fabric, my parrots, a wool rug my dad gave me when i turned 21, my quilts , the photos of my kids as children ..... i guess that is about it. The rest is up for negotiation.

My paintings because i love the images, because at some visceral level they say something to me.
My books because i enjoy reading them over and over again - and i'm sure because for many years they were the refuge in a time of unrest.
My sewing machine and fabric because my quilting is my main way of expressing my creativity, and in the last year or so, i have started creating new ideas in them. Also because it cost $1000, and i couldn't afford to replace it!
My parrots because they depend on me to be the stable force in their lives. They live for so long that they are a responsibility i undertook not lightly, and intend to stand by them as long as possible - at least until i am 90.
The wool rug was given to me by my undemonstrative dad when i decided to travel, and i swear he mumbled something about it keeping me warm in cold times.
The photos of my kids because ... they are my kids, and i love them, and the photos can never be replaced.

All the things i consider irreplacable because of an emotional component.

I have gotten rid of books before and regreted it later - because most of my books are out of print, and can't easily be replaced. I have books that i have had since i was 10.

Status: offline 		During the fires in So Cal we were given 20 minutes to evacuate our homes. I walked out with an old cigar box of my father's that was full of photos, letters, and papers. Grabbed the dog and my purse.

Everything else was replaceable.

It is amazing to find out what TRULY matters to you when you're in a situation like that. I have lived a far simpler life since that moment. Now that I think about it even the photos and papers could have been replaced since other family members had copies. The letters, in his handwriting, written only to me could not have been repleaced.

Status: offline 		My ex husband did a clear-out for me when he literally emptied the house of everything I owned.  So, all family photos and such are already gone.

One thing I did salvage, however, was a beautiful mirror from the early 1900's, which belonged to my grandmother.  I took it with me when I was leaving and it hangs in my apartment.

But now, things are just things to me - I don't have a lot of sentimental value to objects anymore.  What's in my heart and memory will always be there, and no one can take them.

That said, if I had to pack up and go and could take nothing but my cat, I'd be fine.  But the cat comes with me.  And my laptop

Status: offline 		Having done several clear-outs over the last few years I am pretty much in a position where nothing I have am I really willing to part with...well not true, I have started reaccumulating junk (broken computers in particular..I just love tinkering with them).

Status: offline 		I love clearing things out ... the decision making in advance of that process is rather less lovable, consequently, "The Swamp" is not routinely tidy ...

I inadvertantly cleared out a key once ... that still has repercussions. (so these days, keys NEVER get cleared out)

I'd clear out my mind once in a while too ... but I lost it years ago !

Angel that was an odd, but lazy way, of me saying all furbabies and plants. I get attached to my houseplants after having them for decades........weird I know.

I've already cleared my kids out years ago..........they wouldn't want to move back if they could. We are all too much alike. Fortunately they are doing well and in their own homes, compiling their own junk.

I am glad you enjoyed my laziness.

Ah so you do that too with the old computers?

My items of sentimental value have been reduced to a chunk of red brick and a 500MB faulty hard disk. The chunk of red brick comes from the old perimeter wall of the Warsaw Ghetto and the hard disk which I keep hoping to try and repair, contains drafts of my earliest plays, poems and short stories. Most other items of sentimental value have been lost in transit.

However is there something - like my chunk of red brick - which appears on face value to have little value, but is something I'm incredibly attached to. Do you have something in your life similar to which you are very much attached? Is there a story behind your attachment?

Status: offline 		Oh boy.....when I read the title I had no idea what this was about.  You're suppose to throw tings out?  Well, that sure would make it easier to get the car in the garage.

My wife saves everything, the other day I was going through my file cabinet and came across gas bills from the first apartment we lived in 7 years ago, I think it's safe to throw those away now

I have one of those as well...someday I will get it repaired...probably when I have no desire for the stuff on it .
I have 1 box of stuff I have had for years, I haven't unpacked it in over 5 years. Other than that my D&D stuff is important to me.
