darkstarTN -> Changes in the last 10 years? (1/5/2010 10:45:14 PM)

Thought I would throw this out there for New Year's sake. What changes have the majority of the dominant women seen in the lifestyle and in submissive men in general over the past 10+ years?

Is society becoming more tolerant of the lifestyle? (I say tolerant because I dont know if acceptance is the right word)

Has the quality of equipment and toys improved over thus mentioned time frame?

Just thought I throw this out there, thank you

Um, that I re-entered it?  LOL!  Seriously, I haven't been back in it long enough to have caught the major changes in the last 10 years.  I can tell you that the selection of tools/toys available varies widely between Las Vegas and Wyoming as a whole.  Thank goodness for the internet and online shopping!

well i was 11 when it became 2000 so i really didn't pay much attention to what society liked or disliked, hell i still don't =P

The Internet is for Porn.

Instead of having to screw up your courage to visit some sleazy XXX peep-show place to buy toys, now you can shop via the internet, get user reviews, and generally buy anything your twisted mind can figure out how to Google for.

Internet sites have facilitated meeting other like-minded people with non-vanilla sexual desires.

On the less convenient side, do not carry a flogger with the handle counter-weighted with lead shot in your carry-on luggage when boarding a plane, apparently it looks like a bomb on scan. Unless, of course, you get off on public humiliation by fascinated TSA workers asking you about the toys in your carry on bag.

Wait a sec, please. "Twisted minds" Is that a problem? [:D]

LadyPact -> RE: Changes in the last 10 years? (1/6/2010 8:05:42 AM)

I have to concur with at least part of what Drifa is saying.  I've literally lived in places where it was illegal to buy any form of 'marital aid' (to say nothing of a flogger) within the city limits.  The irony of that was that the same city had a small but thriving BDSM community.  LOL.

I would say to at least some degree, there is at least some cross over knowledge.  This isn't just from the net.  Mainstream media has done some of it as well.  Sex sells and what is thought to be better, hotter sex sells more.  I think that kink is having a greater exposure than ever.

There are a lot more resources and folks making toys now than there were ten years ago.  The quality of which honestly depends on who you're buying from.  (Personally, I don't care for buying toys over the net.  I prefer to see the weight and balance of the thing Myself before actually purchasing it.)  My opinion alone, but I preferred the Achella label before it was bought out by Torvea.  I completely admit My personal bias on that one.

I think the leather culture has made great strides in more heterosexual folks getting involved in it.  You certainly can't argue that there's been a change in increased numbers at events such as the leather conferences.  TNG groups have sprung up and taken off all across the country, as well as various SIGs.

Hope you don't mind a male reply (since you addressed your question to dominant women).

i agree with Drifa and LadyPact.  The biggest change that i've seen has been the internet.  The changes that the internet has brought has been both good and bad.

On the positive side, the internet has opened up far more ways for novices to learn about WIITWD.  It has also opened up new avenues to buy a wide variety of BDSM merchandise that was lacking in many cities (especially smaller towns).  i lived in a southern city (in the heart of the Bible belt) for many years, and it was VERY difficult to find a place to buy BDSM supplies.  The internet has eliminated that problem.

On the negative side, the internet has allowed many voyeurs, and fakes to enter our world.  So we see lots of people on here who create profiles, but really don't have the courage to actually meet with anyone and to make their fantasies into reality.  In the old days, you had to put yourself out there in order to meet people and to learn about the lifestyle.  Nowadays, the internet provides a level of anonymity that makes it too easy for people to do and say things that they would NEVER do or say if they were meeting face-to-face.

Also, in this post 9-11 era, we have to be very careful if we choose to attend a BDSM event in another country.  i attended an event in Canada, and when i came back across the US border, they searched my car.  Suffice it to say that i got some strange stares as they went through the items in my trunk.  i could tell that the border patrol officers were suspicious about what some of the items were, but they determined that i was not a terrorist, so they let me go without incident.  i was just happy that they didn't make me explain what each of the items was, and what it was used for.  [;)]

AcademyForSlaves -> RE: Changes in the last 10 years? (1/8/2010 8:57:17 PM)

Hi.

Going by the emails I get from subs I'd say they're starting to understand that Mistresses want real slaves, you know like a sub that'll ask what I want and how he can please me, and if I want to train him, etc. There's more real slaves out there now and that makes me happy. I want more than a play partner or session. I want a real slave. I know he's out there, he just has to find me now.

Hope this helps.
